Wolfpack Women Claim Pair of Third-Place Finishes at NCAA Championships

AUSTIN, Texas – NC State's women's swimmers put together another solid day of competition at the 2019 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships, highlighted by a third-place 100-yard breaststroke finish by Sophie Hansson and a bronze medal in the 200-yard medley relay.
In addition to both of those podium finishes, NC State saw a pair of other individuals garner All-America honors as Elise Haan and Makayla Sargent competed in the consolation finals.
The Pack heads into the final day of the national meet in fifth place with 141 total points. California, Stanford, and Michigan own the top-three spots, and NC State sits just behind Louisville (163 points) in the team standings.
100 BREASTSTROKE:
Sophie Hansson capped off an incredible rookie run in the 100-yard breaststroke as she took home bronze in the event at the NCAA Championships. Her 57.90 mark in the championship final clocked in for third place to secure the first individual All-America honors of her career.
Hansson's race marked the final 100-yard breaststroke competition of her incredible freshman campaign during which she finished in the top three in every single race throughout the 2018-19 season. Her third-place finish was the highest finish in the event in program history.
Olivia Calegan competed in the morning finals, where the took 26th place in 59.91.
200 MEDLEY RELAY:
NC State concluded its Friday finals session with its second third-place finish of the night as Elise Haan, Sophie Hansson, Kylee Alons and Ky-lee Perry claimed bronze in the 200-yard medley relay. The result was the best relay finish at the NCAA Championships in program history.
Haan, Hansson, Alons and Perry dropped time from their prelims mark and touched the wall in 1:34.80 during the championship final to take home the third-place trophy.
400 IM:
Makayla Sargent kicked off the women's second morning of action at the national meet by claiming a spot in the consolation final of the 400-yard individual medley. The Wolfpack junior secured a top-16 finish in the prelims and went on to drop a lifetime best in the event in the consolation final. Sargent clocked in at an impressive 4:05.81, which ranks third in program history and was good for 11th overall at the NCAA Championships. Her Honorable Mention All-America honors were the first of her Wolfpack career.
NC State had a total of five women's swimmers competing in the event on Friday, as Kate Moore, Julia Poole, Emma Muzzy and Summer Finke all joined Sargent in the morning prelims.
Moore (4:08.79) and Poole (4:08.96) placed 19th and 20th, respectively. Muzzy (4:12.18) ranked 32nd overall after the prelims, and Finke (4:15.70) placed 39th.
100 BACKSTROKE:
Senior Elise Haan secured an 11th-place finish (51.40) in the morning prelims and went on to claim All-America honors for the second season in a row in the event. She claimed the Honorable Mention nod by taking 16th overall in the consolation final with a time of 52.07.
100 BUTTERFLY:
Swimming in her second individual race of the meet, freshman Kylee Alons placed 19th overall in the 100-yard butterfly prelims as she clocked in at 52.12.

The Wolfpack women will wrap up competition at the 2019 NCAA Championships with a final day of action on Saturday. Prelims will begin at 10 a.m. EST and will be streamed live on TexasSports.com/Watch. The early heats of the 1650-yard freestyle will be raced beginning at 3:45 p.m. EST, and the finals are set to start at 6 p.m. EST. Saturday's finals session will be broadcast live on ESPNU.
