RALEIGH – Despite cutting its deficit to two and putting the game-winning run at the plate in the bottom of the seventh, the NC State softball team's (16-9, 0-1 ACC) late rally came up short as it dropped its ACC opener on Friday afternoon with No. 25 Virginia Tech (19-4, 3-1 ACC), 4-2, at Dail Stadium.
The Hokies plated three runs on as many hits in the third, and the Wolfpack struck in the fourth with Logan Morris's solo shot to left field. An error in the top of the seventh extended Tech's lead to three, but NC State responded with a run in the bottom half on an RBI fielder's choice. In its rally the Pack had runners at the corners on two outs with the game-winning run at the plate, but came up short.
Of Note
-Sydney Nester (8-3) was charged with the loss after going the distance for the sixth time this season. She allowed one earned run on six hits and fanned six in the outing.
-Sam Russ went 2-for-4 with a single and triple, and Morris collected a single and home run in her three at-bats. The team tallied seven in the game.
-Morris's home run was her seventh of the year and team's 35th in the 2019 season.
How It Happened
-The Hokies plated three runs on as many hits in the third, jumping out to a 3-0 lead. After a single and fielder's choice followed by a groundout put runners at second and third with one out, Darby Trull's sacrifice fly to left field brought the first run across. Caitlyn Nolan's double to left field and Emma Strouth's single to center field scored the other two runs of the frame.
-Morris put the Pack on the board in the fourth with her solo shot to left field.
-Virginia Tech took a 4-1 lead in the top of the seventh when the leadoff batter reached and scored on an error.
-The Pack trimmed its deficit to two in the bottom of the seventh when Randi Farricker scored on a fielder's choice after leading off with a double and advancing to third on pinch hitter Jessica Moore's single up the middle. Russ kept the inning alive with a base hit to right field, putting runners at the corners with two outs for Brigette Nordberg, but Nordberg was unable to get on base.
On Deck
The Pack will look to even the series Saturday when it hosts the Hokies in game two of the weekend. First pitch is slated for 2 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on the ACC Network Extra.
