CHARLESTON, S.C. – The NC State softball team (15-8) held off Youngstown State (1-10) on Sunday afternoon in its final game of the Charleston Invitational at the Patriots Point Complex, 1-0.
Natalie Jones's RBI single with runners on first and second in the second inning proved to be the game-winning run, but not before the Penguins loaded the bases in the seventh with no outs in an attempted rally.
The Wolfpack finished the tournament with a 4-1 record, as all four victories on the weekend were shutouts. Sunday's result was the sixth time this year NC State has shut out an opponent.
Of Note
-Sydney Nester (8-2) went five complete innings and fanned five, and Devin Wallace picked up her second save of the season as the duo tossed the combined shutout.
-Skylar Johnston turned in a multi-hit performance with a double and single in her three at-bats, while Sam Russ, Brigette Nordberg and Jones each tallied a hit.
How It Happened
-Youngstown State managed to load the bases in the second on a fielder's choice, outfield single and walk with one out, but a pop up to short and strikeout ended the threat.
-The Pack plated its lone run in the bottom half thanks to Jones's RBI single to center field. Johnston led off with a double to left center and advanced to third on a wild pitch, and Jessica Moore was hit-by-pitch to put runners at the corners for Jones.
-A one-out bunt single and fielder's choice followed by a wild pitch put runners at second and third for the Penguins in the fifth, but Johnston made a diving catch in front of the first base dugout to keep them off the board.
-NC State tried to find another scoring opportunity in the home half of the fifth when Russ and Nordberg led off with outfield singles and pulled off the double steal to move to second and third, but the side was ultimately retired.
-Youngstown State tried to rally in the seventh by loading the bases with no outs. A leadoff walk and passed ball, followed by a single through the right side and fielder's choice put the Penguins in prime scoring position. A pop up to first base, fielder's choice at home and fly out to center field ended the game though.

NC State will close out its road swing in Charleston when it travels to Charleston Southern Tuesday for a midweek contest. First pitch is slated for 4 p.m. at the CSU Softball Complex.
