
Pack Men Ready for Action at ACC Championships

NC State looks to win its fifth straight men’s conference title
RALEIGH, N.C. – The Wolfpack will continue postseason action this week as it sends its men's swimmers to Greensboro, N.C. to compete at the 2019 ACC Championships. The four-day meet is set for Feb. 27 through March 2 at the Greensboro Aquatic Center.
The finals on Thursday, Friday and Saturday will be streamed live on the ACC Network Extra beginning at 6 p.m. each evening.
MEET NOTEBOOK:
NC State's men have won 28 ACC team titles in the history of the program. Since the creation of the championship meet in 1962, the Pack has taken home 23 titles, including a conference-best 12 championship wins in a row from 1966 to 1982, and also won a share of the 1963 title.
The Wolfpack owns 382 titles in the events that are still contested at the conference meet. The Pack men dominate the ACC record book. Headed into the 2019 ACC Championships, NC State has ownership of 11 meet records, with all of those having been set by the Pack in 2017 or 2018.
NC State has seen its men named ACC Meet MVP a total of 12 times as its swimmers have garnered the honors seven times and its divers five times. Alumnus Ryan Held was named ACC Meet MVP each of the past two seasons, and the Pack men have taken home that honor in three of the last four seasons.
2018-19 IN REVIEW:
The Pack is headed into the postseason with a 6-0 record in head-to-head matchups. Its six wins include three over opponents that were ranked at the time of competition – No. 2 Texas, No. 14 Virginia and No. 15 Arizona.
NC State has been ranked in the top six of the CSCAA/TYR Top 25 for the entirety of the 2018-19 season and has spent the majority of the season ranked No. 5 or better. The Pack was highest-ranked ACC team in the nation for the entirety of the regular season.
SUCCESS UNDER HOLLOWAY:
Since Braden Holloway took over as head coach at the start of the 2011-12 season, the Wolfpack has enjoyed unparalleled success in the pool.
During the 2010-11 season, NC State finished eighth at the ACC Championships and did not score points at the NCAA Championships.
NC State's men have since secured four straight wins at the ACC Championships and have finished a program-best No. 4 at the NCAA Championships for four seasons in a row leading up to the 2019 postseason.
The Pack's men have won national titles in each of the last three seasons, including a program-best five event wins at the 2018 NCAA Championships. NC State's 400-yard freestyle relay title in 2016 was its first for the men since Cullen Jones won the 50-yard freestyle in 2006.
THE PACK IS BACK:
NC State returns a solid group of key performers who are set to help lead the way during postseason action. Overall, six of the Pack's returners gained All-American status last season, and four men won individual or relay titles at last season's conference meet.
Justin Ress (200-yard freestyle), Coleman Stewart (100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke) and Andreas Vazaios (200-yard individual medley) all enter the 2019 ACC Championships as the defending champions in their respective events.
Four swimmers who won national titles at the 2018 NCAA Championships are back on the roster, including individual titlists Vazaios, who is the reigning ACC Men's Swimmer of the Year, and Stewart.
Jacob Molacek entered the 2018-19 season as the highest returning point scorer in the nation after picking up gold medals with the Wolfpack relays and securing top-five finishes in multiple other events at the 2018 NCAA Championships.
Junior James Brady tallied a podium finish for the second season in a row as he took third place on platform during last week's diving competition. Brady bested the program record that he already held and tallied a 376.60 to take home bronze. His podium finish, as well as the points from Holt Gray and Stewart Spanbauer's action on the boards, will be added to this week's swimming competition tally.
SWIMMING STREAKS:
The Pack owns four or more ACC titles in a row in seven different events headed into the 2019 meet. NC State's relays have shown dominance in recent history at the ACC Championships, as the Pack has won the 400-yard freestyle relay six times in a row and took first in the 800 and 200-yard freestyle relays five straight times.
NC State has seen its swimmers win ACC Male Swimmer of the Year four times in a row. Vazaios most recently earned the honors at the conclusion of the 2017-18 season. The Wolfpack senior comes into the final conference championship of his career having won the 200-yard individual medley each of the past two seasons.
TOP ACC MARKS:
Headed into the 2019 ACC Championships, NC State's men have consistently posted some of the best marks in the conference throughout the season.
The Pack has its men as the top seed in three freestyle events as freshman Nyls Korstanje's 19.29 50-yard freestyle time stands atop the conference. Molacek (42.45r) posted the ACC's fastest 100-yard freestyle time of the regular season, and Stewart (1:34.46) leads the conference in the 200-yard freestyle.
Stewart will once again look to sweep the backstroke events at the 2019 ACC Championships. The Wolfpack junior also owns the conference's top marks in both the 100 and 200-yard backstroke events, and he enters the championship meet as the top seed in the 100-yard butterfly.
UP NEXT:
NC State's divers will begin preparation for the NCAA Zone B Diving Championships, which will be hosted by Auburn and will run March 11-13. The men's swimmers will wrap up the season with the 2019 NCAA Swimming & Diving Championships, held March 27-30 in Austin, Texas.
