RIO GRANDE, PR – The NC State men's golf team is in second place of the Puerto Rico Classic played at the Rio Mar Country Club after the second round of play Monday.
Junior Benjamin Shipp shot a four-under par 68 Monday – the second-lowest score of the day by any competitor – to move into a four-way tie for first-place on the individual leaderboard. The Duluth, Ga., native had seven birdies on Monday with his only trouble coming on holes 11 and 17.
Shipp is in position for his second victory of the 2018-19 season and his third top-five finish in six tournaments.
NC State senior Stephen Franken was the individual leader after the first round, and despite a one-over par 73 on Monday, is just one shot back of Shipp in a tie for fifth-place. The Raleigh native had an eagle and two birdies, but three bogeys an a double bogey kept Franken from remaining in the lead.
Like Shipp, Franken has put himself in position for a top-five finish. A top-five finish would be the fourth for Franken in six tournaments this season.
Junior Christian Salzer shot the second-best score of the day for the Pack with a one-under par 71. The Sumter, S.C., native had an eagle and three birdies in the second round on Monday to move into a tie for 21st place.
Senior Harrison Rhoades is next for the Pack, one shot back of Salzer in a tie for 29th place. Rhoades had four birdies on Monday and finished with a scorecard of two-over par 74.
Sophomore Easton Paxton rounds out the Pack lineup in a tie for 42nd place. Paxton shot a two-under par 70 on Sunday, but ran into some trouble on Monday and finished with a six-over par 78.
