RIO GRANDE, PR – The NC State men's golf team is in first place of the Puerto Rico Classic played at the Rio Mar Country Club after one round of play Sunday.
NC State senior Stephen Franken is on-top of the individual leaderboard after shooting a five-under par 67 on Sunday.
The Raleigh native made the turn at even-par, but shot five birdies on the final nine holes to grab the lead. The reigning ACC Player of the Year, who shot a tournament-record round of 62 in last year's event, had eight biridies in the opening round.
Franken has a two-shot lead on the field.
Sophomore Easton Paxton is next for the Pack in a tie for sixth place at two-under par. Paxton registered four birdies against two bogeys to finish the round with a score of 70.
Junior Benjamin Shipp is in a tie for 14th place at one-under par. The Duluth, Ga., native had five birdies in the opening round.
Senior Harrison Rhoades shot even-par in the opening round 72 in the opening round, finishing with three birdies.
Junior Christian Salzer rounded out the Pack lineup in a tie for 38th place at two-over par. Salzer had three birdies on the opening 18.
The Pack has a two shot lead over second-place Georgia and a three-shot lead on third-place Georgia Tech.
The second round starts Monday with an 8 am shotgun start.
