RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State cross country team will send six student-athletes from its current freshman class to Tallahasse, Fla. this weekend to compete at the 2019 USATF Junior Cross Country Championships.
The national meet will be held at the Apalachee Regional Park on Saturday, Feb. 2, with seven races covering various age groups being contested on the day. The junior women's 6K will be raced first at 11 a.m., followed by the junior men's 8K at 11:40 a.m.
NC State's women will be represented by Heather Holt, Mariah Howlett, Sarah LaTour and Savannah Shaw.
Holt and Shaw made instant impacts as a part of the Wolfpack's lineup, as both competed in uniform at all five meets during the Wolfpack's 2018 season. Both runners scored for NC State at the ACC Championships, and Holt went on to earn a spot on the All-Region team after placing 23rd at the NCAA Southeast Regional with the best 6K time of her freshman campaign.
LaTour started her season by running unattached at two meets and ran in Wolfpack uniform for the first time at the ACC Championships.
Nate Kawalec and Yared Mekonnen will compete for the Wolfpack men. Both NC State freshman competed unattached at the ECU Pirate Invitational in October, where Kawalec took second place in 24:39.99 and Mekonnen placed 23rd with a time of 25:34.77.
USATF Championship medals will be awarded to the top 10 men's and women's individual finishers in each Junior Championship race. The meet is also a selection event for the roster for the 2019 IAAF World Cross Country Championships, which will be held March 30 in Aarhus, Denmark. The full selection criteria for the World Cross Country Championships can be found here.
