RALEIGH – The ninth-ranked NC State women's basketball team (10-0) remained unbeaten on the season as it defeated the visiting Elon Phoenix (3-5) 62-49 Sunday afternoon on Kay Yow Court inside James T. Valvano Arena at Reynolds Coliseum.
Wolfpack sophomore Elissa Cunane posted her sixth double-double of the season with a career-high 28 points to go with 16 rebounds. The center shot 9-of-15 from the floor and tacked on 10 points from the charity stripe in what was her fourth double-double outing in a row. Cunane has now scored 20 or more points in three games this season, adding to her performances against Hawaii (22 points) and North Texas (24 points).
Kayla Jones (12 points) and Aislinn Konig (10 points) joined Cunane in double figures. Jones found the double-digit scoring column for the third game in a row and the seventh time this season.
Both teams shot just 36 percent from the field in the game, but NC State found its advantage in the paint where it powered its way to 32 points. The Pack forced Elon into 20 turnovers and snagged eight steals on the afternoon, led by Kai Crutchfield's four.
The Wolfpack led for almost the entirety of Sunday's game. NC State was up 15-8 after the first quarter, but Elon went on to score the first eight points of the second quarter to take its only advantage of the game (16-15). The Pack responded with a 12-0 run that spanned 2:32 late in the second period and went into the halftime break with a 34-23 lead.
Despite scoring just eight points in the second quarter, the Wolfpack managed to stave off the Phoenix with the help of a few trips to the free throw line. NC State put together another run in the fourth quarter, scoring 10 unanswered points in the middle of the period to regain a double-digit lead (56-43) that it would not relinquish for the remainder of the game.
NC State will play its last non-conference game of the regular season and its final home game of the 2019 calendar year on Thursday, Dec. 19 when it welcomes Chattanooga to Raleigh. Tip-off between NC State and the Mocs is scheduled for 6:30 p.m., and the contest will be televised nationally on the ACC Network.
