LOUISVILLE, Ky. – The NC State women's soccer team advanced to the ACC Championship semifinals on Sunday afternoon with a 2-1 overtime win over No. 14 Louisville at Lynn Stadium in Louisville, Ky.
It is the second time in three years that the Wolfpack has advanced to the semifinals of the championship, and the fourth consecutive year the squad has accumulated 10 or more wins in a single season.
The Pack improves to 10-5-4 on the season, extending its win streak to four, while the Cardinals fall to 12-4-2 overall.
It was a defensive showing by both squads in the first half, as both teams tallied just one shot apiece and won a combined three corner kicks.
The best scoring opportunity for the Pack in the first half came with just two minutes left, as Tziarra King found Ricci Walkling with a low pass inside the box following an Anna Toohey free kick, but the shot missed just right of the near post.
In the 54th minute, the Wolfpack took a 1-0 lead thanks to an own goal off of a Lulu Guttenberger corner kick, but Brooklyn Rivers converted a Louisville penalty kick in the 80th minute to knot the score.
King put away the overtime goal in the 97th minute, her 13th of the season, to give the Pack the thrilling win. Guttenberger forced a turnover on a Louisville corner kick, passed to King at midfield, and her strike from approximately 10 yards out beat goalkeeper Gabby Kouzelos.
NC State will face top-seeded North Carolina Friday in the ACC Championship semifinals at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C., at 5 p.m. The match will be broadcast on the ACC Network.
