Raleigh, N.C. – Twelve NC State football players will get to run out of the Carter-Finley Stadium one last time, and those 12 get to finish their Wolfpack careers with a game against their biggest rivals, the North Carolina Tar Heels.
Â
Kickoff from Carter-Finley Stadium between the Wolfpack (4-7, 1-6 ACC) and Tar Heels (5-6, 3-4 ACC) is set for 7 p.m., and the game will be televised on the ACC Network.
Â
Before the Pack takes the field, 12 seniors will be honored in their final game wearing the Red & White.
Â
"I'm excited for our seniors this week, and obviously to have rivalry week and senior day at the same time for 12 guys that have been through a lot and done a lot for our program," said head coach Dave Doeren. "It's always an emotional day for the young men and their families.
Â
"Those are 12 very special young men to our staff, our team and me."
Â
NC State is coming off a 28-26 loss at Georgia Tech last Thursday. Thanks to a refocused effort to run the ball, the Pack nearly completed a comeback with three second-half TDs.
Â
NC State used a strong performance from its run game at Georgia Tech. The Pack rushed for 230 yards, the second-most in a game this season and the most since the Western Carolina game.
Â
"I thought last week we were able to do it pretty well in the run game," said Doeren. "That sets up our quarterback for a lot of things.
Â
"We want to be physical, win the line of scrimmage, take pride in pancaking people and get backs to the second level and let them do their thing so that corners and safeties have to tackle your backs. That's a part of how we've built this team, and we have good talent in the backfield to feature."
Â
The North Carolina Tar Heels have enjoyed an influx of talent under first-year head coach Mack Brown (in his second stint at UNC).
Â
Freshman QB Sam Howell has set the FBS true freshman QB record with 32 passing TDs thus far. He also owns the UNC school record for most TD passes in a season.
Â
"They're obviously playing well with Sam Howell at quarterback, and their tailback is a very impressive young man," said Doeren. "Their receiving corps has made a lot of plays for them throughout the season."
Â
Nine of UNC's 11 games in 2019 have been decided by seven points or fewer. Sitting on five wins, the Tar Heels need a victory at Carter-Finley to secure a bowl spot.
Â
The game will mark the 109th meeting in the series between the Wolfpack and the Tar Heels. The rivalry, which began in 1894, is the Pack's oldest among ACC teams and the fourth-most played series in the ACC.
Â
Under Dave Doeren, the Wolfpack is 4-2 against UNC, having won four of the last five and each of the last three.
Â
"We get to play our final home game against our rival," said Doeren. "It's great to have a rivalry this close together. Every one of these games that I've been a part of has been heated, and I know how much we want to win and how much they want to win.
Â
"It's going to be a great football game. We really look forward to the opportunity to compete and go out there and play."
Â
With an 7:00 p.m. kickoff, the Wolfpack Sports Network will begin pregame coverage with the Lowes Foods Countdown to Kickoff at 5:00 p.m. In the second hour of the pregame show shortly after 6:00 p.m., longtime network analyst Johnny Evans will take questions from fans on 'Ask the Analyst.'
