Men’s Golf Announces Three Signees in Class of 2020

RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State men's golf head coach Press McPhaul announced Friday that Class of 2020 prospects Ethan Choi, Nick Mathews and Drue Nicholas have all signed National Letters of Intent to join the Wolfpack men's golf program.
Ethan Choi
Choi is from Pincher Creek, Alberta, Canada and is ranked as the number three player in Canada in the class of 2020 on the National Junior Golf Scoreboard.
In nine tournaments in 2019, Choi has finished in the top-10 in seven of them and has three wins. He won the PGA of Alberta Junior Masters, the Canadian Junior World Championship Qualifier and the Alberta Season Opener on Maple Leaf Junior Golf Tour. He also finished second in the Future Links Western Championship.
In 2016, Choi shot a round of 59 on his way to winning the Alberta Bantam Championship.
Choi was named the 2017 Alberta Junior Golfer of the Year
In a junior career dating back to 2015, Choi has 25 top-10 finishes, including 15 top-five finishes and four wins.
Choi attends St. Michael's School and has been on honor roll since seventh grade.
McPhaul on Choi: "Ethan is a superb athlete, competing in multiple organized sports besides golf- basketball, volleyball and badminton. He has always shown ability to score and now is adding more power that will be a great asset to his scoring. He has an easy going, level demeanor and is a tremendous, focused competitor. I'm grateful that he has chosen to join us here at NC State!"
Nick Mathews
Mathews is from Mebane, N.C., and attends Eastern Alamance High School.
He is currently ranked as the No.2 player in the Tar Heel Youth Golf Association (TYGA) rankings and is ranked as the fourth-best golfer in the Carolinas and second in North Carolina in the class of 2020 in the Carolinas Golf Association Junior Rankings
Mathews had strong summer in 2019, finishing second in the North Carolina Junior Boys' Stroke Play and claiming medalist honors at the 2019 U.S. Junior Qualifying with a 68 in June. In July, he finished in second place at the 41st North & South Junior Championships held at Pinehurst. In August, he finished in second place at the CGA Hope Valley Junior Invitational.
He was also a 2018 North Carolina Second-Team member.
Mathews is a three-time Academic All-Conference member and has a 4.25 GPA.
McPhaul on Mathews: "Nick is a tremendous worker. He has great love for the game. He is technically sound with great instruction. I have been consistently impressed by Nick's game, work ethic and character as I have gotten the chance to know him. Proud to have him at NC State!"
Drue Nicholas
Nicholas is from Egg Harbor Township and attends St. Augustine Preparatory School.
He is ranked as the No.1 player in the state of New Jersey and No. 67 in the Class of 2020 on the National Junior Golf Scoreboard player rankings.
He took first place at the 2017 AJGA Junior All-Star event at Wyndham Resort with a scorecard of nine-under par (70-70-67). He also claimed medalist honors at the 2017 Optimist Junior International Golf Championship with a final score of two-under par (72-70-72).
Nicholas has a total of eight American Junior Golf Association (AJGA) top-10 finishes.
Nicholas has been a member of the Deans List Honor Roll every semester of high school.
McPhaul on Nicholas: "Drue is an excellent competitor who is also from a multi sport background. He has a calm and relaxed personality and is a superb competitor. He has significant skills in scoring and competition. He has shown consistency in competition and has steadily improved year by year. He's a great addition to our team at NC State!"
