RALEIGH - Fresh off the highest-ranking in program history, the seventh-ranked NC State rifle team travels to Morgantown, W.V. Nov. 16-17 for two top-10 matches. The Wolfpack looks to continue its recent success, taking on a pair of top-10 teams in No. 5 Akron and No. 2 West Virginia, Nov. 16 and 17.
NC State's performance at then-No. 12Â Memphis Nov. 9 translated to the Wolfpack achieving the highest ranking in program history, checking in at No. 7 in this week's Collegiate Rifle Coaches Association (CRCA) rankings. The ranking marks the first time since Oct. 15, 2018 that NC State has been in the top 10.
No. 5 Akron holds a 4-1 record, having defeated VMI, Navy and Mississippi as well as recording the top score at the X-Count Range Competition, besting Ohio State and Nebraska. Akron's lone loss was to top-ranked Kentucky Nov. 10.
The 4-0 Mountaineers have competed exclusively against top-15 teams this season. The Mountaineers'Â most recent match was against Memphis, and West Virginia defeated the Tigers 4714-4654.
The matchups against Akron and West Virginia serve as the final team competitions of 2019. The Winter Airgun Championships will take place in Colorado Springs, Colo. Dec. 6-8. The Wolfpack sent six competitors to the Winter Airgun Championships in 2018. NC State will then return to action in the spring, beginning Jan. 8 at top-10 ranked Kentucky.
