DURHAM, N.C. – Kaylee Frazier recorded a rally-scoring era program record 38 digs Sunday afternoon against Duke. Frazier's career-high is the third most digs in school history and the most since 1994. Frazier was one of three NC State players with 20+ digs, joined by Jade Parchment (27) and Nina Sharpton (20). As a team NC State (10-16, 5-9 ACC) totaled 117 digs, the most for the Wolfpack in an ACC match since 1995.
Despite a phenomenal performance, the Pack was unable to halt Duke's (12-15, 5-9 ACC) comeback, falling in five sets (25-22, 25-23, 18-25, 22-25, 7-15). The match is NC State's fourth consecutive five-set and the fifth in the last six games.
Melissa Evans' fired off a team-best 19 kills while also contributing seven digs and four blocks. For the third-consecutive match, Jade Parchment and Jessica Kemp joined Evans with double-digit kills tallying 17 and 16, respectively. Lydia Adam reached double-digits for the first time in her career, totaling 10 kills and becoming the fourth NC State player to do so Sunday.
Nina Sharpton also had a career-high day, totaling 59 assists and 20 digs. Sharpton's 59 assists are the highest for an NC State player since Dec. 1, 2017.
HOW IT HAPPENED
The Pack had an evenly balanced attack in the first set, as Evans recorded seven kills followed by Parchment and Kemp with five and four, respectively. The first set was very back-and-forth, as both teams were tied at 12. NC State took the 15-12 lead on three consecutive kills from Evans, Kemp and Parchment. Duke tied the set once more with back-to-back NC State hitting errors however, a 5-0 run for NC State was all it took to take the first set.
Duke and the Wolfpack opened the second set in similar fashion, tied at four. The Blue Devils took their largest lead of the set, 12-8, but a kill from Evans and NC State block kept the team within two. Still down 14-10, the Pack earned a side out on a Duke service error before Evans had back-to-back kills that narrowed the Blue Devil advantage to one. Duke held the one-point advantage until Kemp followed a kill with a block that swung the momentum into NC State's favor. Neither team gained larger than a one-point advantage until NC State took two-consecutive points for a 21-19 lead that would hold through the end of the set.
The Blue Devils were able to swing the momentum into their favor, beginning with a 25-18 victory in the third set. NC State looked to hold off Duke, opening the fourth with a 6-2 advantage however, the Blue Devils inched closer, 12-10, following a pair of NC State errors. With NC State up 19-17, Duke used back-to-back blocks to tie up the match before continuing with a 5-0 run for a 22-19 lead that would help them win the set. Duke hit an errorless .500 in the fifth and final set.
