CORAL GABLES, FLA. – Despite a stubborn comeback effort from Miami, the NC State volleyball team held off the Hurricanes Friday evening, winning 3-2 (25-20, 25-23, 23-25, 26-28, 16-14). It is the first time in school history the Pack has won two matches against Miami (10-13, 6-9 ACC) in the same season.
Melissa Evans led the Pack with a spectacular performance which included a career-high 23 kills, four digs and four blocks on a .367 hitting percentage. Evans' first kill of the night gave the junior her 1,000 career-point, becoming the only active NC State player to eclipse 1,000. She concluded the night with 915 career kills.
Evans was joined in double-digit kills by two other Pack players, Jade Parchment and Lauryn Terry. Parchment recorded 19 kills with 12 digs for her 15th career double-double while Terry had 10 in addition to four blocks.
In her first start since Oct. 27, Pam Chukwujekwu was a force at the net recording a career-best nine blocks in addition to two kills. Chukwujekwu's nine blocks are the most for an NC State player in an ACC match this season.
"Really proud of our teams efforts tonight," said head coach Linda Hampton-Keith. "To come in here and go up 2-0, on the road, and then go to five, which seems to be a trend for us lately. Going in the fifth, to be able to really lock in and gut through a 16-14 fifth set on the road, I'm just really proud of our team. We just keep getting better and better in the month of November."
HOW IT HAPPENED
NC State (11-16, 6-9 ACC) dominated the first two sets, which included 11 kills from Evans. NC State opened the first set with two kills from Jade Parchment. After never trailing in the first set, the second set featured nine ties and four lead changes. Miami took an early 10-5 lead, but a 7-1 run for the Pack evened things at 12-12. After a back-and-forth battle, NC State came away with the set, finishing on a 6-2 run.
Miami controlled the third and fourth sets, hitting .324 as a team. In the fifth and decisive set, the Hurricanes controlled the tempo early taking an 8-5 lead. Kills from Terry and Evans, in addition to a block from Chukwujekwu and Evans, tied the match at eight. The Hurricanes took back a 10-8 lead, before two Miami hitting errors allowed NC State to move ahead 11-10. The Pack would not trail again in the set, ultimately taking the match on the 13th block of the night.
