RALEIGH – In a strong defensive outing by both squads, the NC State women's soccer team battled to a 0-0 draw with top-ranked Virginia on Wednesday evening at Dail Soccer Stadium in Raleigh, N.C.
This is the second time in three years that the two teams have played each other and the match has resulted in a 0-0 draw, as the teams also did on Sept. 15, 2017, in Raleigh. The Wolfpack moves to 6-4-3 (1-1-3 ACC), while the Cavaliers move to 10-0-3 (2-0-3 ACC) on the year.
The entire match was tightly contested, as NC State tallied 13 shots (two on goal) while Virginia had 12 (five on goal). NC State's backline performed at a high level, shutting down a team that was averaging almost three and-a-half goals per game and ACC goals leader Diana Ordonez (12).
NC State managed to find several scoring opportunities to end the contest in the second overtime period, but couldn't put away the game-winner.
Jessica Berlin notched her fourth shutout of the year in goal, matching her career-high in saves for the third time this season with five.
The Pack will return to action Sunday when it hosts No. 20 Virginia Tech to wrap up a three-game home stand. Kickoff is 5 p.m. at Dail Soccer Stadium, and the match will be broadcast on the ACC Network. This will be NC State's fourth and final contest to be aired on the linear network.
