RALEIGH, N.C. – Just two nights after a heartbreaking five-set loss, the NC State volleyball team made sure Friday night's match had a different ending. Led by Jessica Kemp and Melissa Evans, the Wolfpack came away with a 3-2 victory against Virginia Tech (7-9, 0-3 ACC) in Reynolds Coliseum. NC State (6-10, 1-3 ACC) won by set scores of 25-19, 28-30, 25-12, 20-25, 15-5.
Kemp, who also had a spectacular performance Wednesday evening, put up career numbers with 22 kills and a .395 hitting percentage. She paired that with five blocks on the defensive end. Evans contributed 20 kills, marking her fourth match this season with 20 or more, an ACC best. Jade Parchment recorded her second-consecutive double-double with 15 kills and 15 digs, after also doing so against North Carolina on Wednesday.
After seeing limited playing time in the early part of ACC action, Pam Chukwujekwu started Friday evening for the Pack. Chukwujekwu came up big, tallying nine kills with just one hitting error for a .571 percentage in addition to a career-high seven blocks.
The career-highs kept coming as Grace Irvin recorded a pair of personal-bests for the second time this week, on the way to her first career double-double. The senior tallied 31 digs and 14 assists. Nina Sharpton and Kristen McDaniel split setting duties, serving up 31 and 19 assists, respectively.
HOW IT HAPPENED
With the match tied at 1-1, NC State rolled to a third set victory hitting .375 as a team and seeing three kills from four different players in addition to limiting the Hokies production to .088.
Virginia Tech forced a decisive fifth set with a solid performance in the fourth, which included five kills from Cera Powell. Seven of NC State's 13 kills in the set came from Kemp.
In the fifth set, NC State put themselves in control on back-to-back kills from Jessica Kemp and Jade Parchment for a 4-2 lead. The lead was extended with another kill by Parchment, a Virginia Tech error and one of the Pack's 14 blocks. With an 8-5 lead, NC State fired off seven straight points to take the match.
