Pack Hit Four Homers, Remain Undefeated in Fall Ball

RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State softball team continued to show of its offense Saturday afternoon, putting up 14 runs against East Carolina. The Pack won 14-2 on a performance that included four home runs and 15 hits. NC State moves to 5-0-1 in its fall schedule.
Tatyana Forbes led the Pack with three hits, three runs scored and two RBIs. The team's four home runs came courtesy of Angie Rizzi, Carson Shaner, Logan Morris and Skylar Johnston. Morris, Rizzi, Johnston, Shaner and Randi Farricker all had a multi-hit game.
Sydney Nester pitched a shutout six innings where she struck out nine and allowed just three hits. Devin Wallace came in relief, pitching 2.2 innings. Sam Gress closed out the game in the circle with 1.1 innings pitched and retiring every batter she faced.
NC State got on the board early with a 2-0 lead in the first inning thanks to Rizzi's home run. Gress led off the third inning with a double before moving to third on back-to-back outs. Morris dropped a ball into right field scoring Gress for a 3-0 lead.
With one out in the fifth inning, Sam Russ showed off her speed with a triple down the right field line. Forbes singled and stole second before Rizzi drew a walk, loading the bases. Brigette Nordberg came up big with a two-RBI double for a 5-0 lead.
In the sixth inning, Farricker singled to right field before Gress was hit by a pitch. Shaner drew a walk, loading the bases for the second time. Russ hit into a fielders' choice as ECU prevented the run from scoring and grabbed the second out of the inning. Forbes came up big with a two-RBI single through the middle, pushing the Pack's lead to 7-0, before Morris reached second on an ECU throwing error that scored two more for a 9-0 advantage.
The powerful NC State offense continued in the eighth with four runs that included a pair of home runs from Shaner and Morris. Farricker led off the frame with a single before Shaner's homer scored two. Forbes placed a bunt single, with the ball dying right in front of the plate, followed by Morris' home run.
Johnston kept the lineup moving, with an absolute shot over the left field wall and a 14-2 Pack lead.
ECU avoided the shut out with a two-run homerun in the top of the eighth.
NC State concludes its fall schedule tomorrow, Sunday, Oct. 20 with a doubleheader against Wingate with an adjusted start time of 2 p.m.
