RALEIGH, N.C. – It was a big day for the NC State softball offense as the Pack totaled 14 runs off 14 hits Saturday against NC Central on the way to a 14-0 victory. NC State moves to a 4-0-1 record in its fall schedule. The Pack had two home runs, including a grand slam from Skylar Johnston.
Sam Russ had an outstanding day, batting 4-for-4 with two singles, a double and a triple in addition to a walk. Johnston ended the day going 3-for-4.
Devin Wallace started the game for NC State, pitching a solid five innings with 11 strikeouts and while allowing just two hits. Sydney Nester pitched the final five innings, allowing three hits all while holding NC Central without a run.
NC State took the lead early after Russ drew a leadoff walk to open the game. A sac bunt moved her to second before NC Central's first error of the game allowed Russ to score for a 1-0 lead. Rizzi led off the second inning with a single before stealing second base. A pop out and wild pitch added another run for the Wolfpack.
In a big third inning, Madeline Curtis led off with a double to the right-center gap. Russ and Forbes followed with back-to-back RBIs to the same spot on the field and a 4-0 NC State lead. A hit by pitch, fielders' choice and walk would load the bases, setting up Johnston's grand slam.
After being held scoreless in the fourth, NC State responded with an additional two runs in the fifth. Brigette Nordberg hit a lead off single before Randi Farricker came up big with a two-out home run over the left field fence. Farricker's home run made it an 11-0 game.
A bases-clearing, three-RBI double from Rizzi in the sixth would bring in the additional three runs for the Pack.
