Pack Finishes in Seventh Place at Gopher Invitational

INDEPENDENCE, MINN. – The NC State men's golf team opened the season with a seventh-place finish at the Gopher Invitational held at Windsong Farm Golf Club.
Oklahoma, which ended last season ranked number two in the Golfstat rankings, won the event by three shots over Texas. Iowa finished in third place, one shot back of the Longhorns. Arkansas finished in fourth place. NC State was just one shot back of tournament-host Minnesota and Purdue who tied for fifth place.
The Pack was led by defending ACC Player of the Year Stephen Franken. Franken just missed out of a top-10 finish as he closed the tournament in a tie for 11th place. The Raleigh native shot a one-over par 72 in the final round on Monday to finished the tournament with a scorecard of 69-73-72.
Sophomore Easton Paxton was next for the Pack in a tie for 23rd place. Paxton tied with Benjamin Shipp for the low round by a Pack golfer on Monday, shooting an even-par 71.
Shipp finished one shot back of Paxton in a tie for 28th place. After an opening round 76, Shipp shot back-to-back even-par rounds of 71.
Senior Harrison Rhoades finished two shots back of Shipp in a tie for 38th place. Rhoades shot a one-over par 72 on the final day of competition.
Junior Christain Salzer rounds out the Pack lineup in a tie for 52nd place. Salzer improved every round during the tournament, finishing with a one-over par 72 Monday.
The Pack returns to action Friday, Sept. 21 when it begins play at the Maui Jim Intercollegiate held at Mirabel Golf Club in Scottsdale, Ariz.
