Pack in a Tie for Fifth Place After One Round of Maui Jim Intercollegiate

SCOTTSDALE, ARIZ. – The NC State men's golf team opened the Maui Jim Intercollegiate on Friday with a team score of seven-under par to sit in a tie for fifth place after 18 holes of play. The Maui Jim has an impressive field that features nine teams that received bids into the NCAA Championships last season, including seven teams that advanced to the NCAA Finals.
Junior Benjamin Shipp led the back on Friday with a five-under par 65 to finish the opening round in a tie for third place. Shipp caught fire in the middle of the first round, birdieing five of six holes from the fifth to tenth hole. After his lone bogey of the day on the 13th, Shipp closed with a birdie on 17 to card a 65.
Sophomore Easton Paxton is next for the Pack with a two-under par 68. Paxton opened with bogeys on two of the first three holes, but didn't have another bogey on the day as the Riverton, Wyo., native birdied holes five and seven on the front nine and after nine consecutive pars, birdied 17 and 18 to finish the day under par. Paxton is in a tie for 24thplace on the leaderboard.
Junior Christian Salzer is next for the Pack with a one-under 69. Salzer was one-over through 13 holes, but had a strong close to his day as he birdied three of the final five holes to shoot his best score of the young Fall season. The South Carolina native is in a tie for 31st place.
Reigning ACC Player of the Year Stephen Franken shot a one-over par 71 in the first round. Franken ran into trouble on the front nine, shooting a two-over before the turn, but was consistent on the back nine, closing with eight pars and a birdie.
Senior Harrison Rhoades rounded out the NC State lineup with a two-over par 72. Rhoades shot a one-under on the back nine with birdies on holes 11 and 13.
LSU is in the lead after one round with a score of 17-under par. Georgia Tech and Arizona State are tied for second place two shots back of the Tigers. Augusta is in fourth place and the Pack is tied with Minnesota, one shot back of Augusta.
NC State will tee off of Hole 10 in Saturday's second round with the first Pack player going off at 8:40 MST.
