Maize and Nelson Sign Professional Contracts with Spanish Clubs

RALEIGH – Akela Maize and Chelsea Nelson of the NC State women's basketball team recently signed professional contracts with clubs in Spain in advance of the 2018-19 season. Maize has joined C.B. Al-Qazeres and Nelson has signed on with CD Zamarat.

Maize and Nelson recently concluded stellar four-year careers at NC State, helping to guide their senior team to the NCAA Tournament Sweet 16 for the first time since 2007.

Senior (2017-18): ACC Academic Honor Roll … All-ACC Defensive Team … Named to the Lisa Leslie Watch List for the nation's top centers prior to the beginning of the season … Played in all 35 games, making 33 starts … Averaged 24.7 minutes, 10.0 points, 5.5 rebounds, and 1.9 blocks per game … Made 68 total blocks on the season which is the second best single-season total in program history … The team's most accurate shooter at 130-249 (.522) … Scored in double figures on 17 occasions … Recorded a double-double (14 points, 11 rebounds) in NC State's ACC season-opening win at Virginia Tech on Dec. 28 … Led or tied for the team lead in scoring on three occasions … Led or tied for the team lead in rebounds on one occasion … Scored a career high of 20 points in the Nov. 23 win over Alabama … Played a career high 36 minutes in the win at UNC on Jan. 18 … Dished out a career high four assists in the Feb. 4 win over Boston College … Swatted a career high five blocks on two occasions, most notably during NC State's Feb. 1 win over No. 10 Florida State.Â

Senior (2017-18): ACC Academic Honor Roll … First Team All-ACC … Led the team in scoring (12.9 points per game) and rebounding (9.4 rebounds per game) as a senior … Scored 10+ points in a game 28 times as a senior and 62 times for her career … Recorded 11 double-doubles during her senior season (21 career) … Grabbed 10+ rebounds in a single game 13 times as a senior (23 career) … Led the team in scoring on 11 occasions and rebounding on 20 occasions during her senior season … Set a new ACC Tournament record with 22 rebounds in a March 2 win over No. 18 Duke … Scored a career high 30 points in a Feb. 22 win at Pittsburgh … Finished fifth all-time in the single-season record book in rebounds (329) and FTs made (126) … Finished second all-time in the single-season record book in FTs attempted (180) … Concluded her career 27th in total points scored (1173), ninth in games played (128), 11th in FTs made (308), and 11th in rebounds collected (794) … From her freshman to senior seasons, improved her scoring average from 4.9 points per game to 12.9 points per game … From her freshman to senior seasons, improved her rebounding average from 4.0 rebounds per game to 9.4 rebounds per game.
