NEW ORLEANS, La. – The NC State women's cross country program has been selected as the top team in the Southeast Region to start the 2018 campaign, as the United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association (USTFCCCA) released its preseason regional rankings Monday afternoon. The Wolfpack men were picked third in the region in the first rankings of the 2018 season.
Regional rankings will be released by the USTFCCCA each Monday of the regular season beginning Sept. 10, and the Pack will head to Rock Hill, S.C. for the 2018 Southeast Regional Championships on Friday, Nov. 9.
In 2017, NC State's women continued to build on their recent success, capturing both the ACC crown and the Southeast Region title for the second year in a row. The Pack returns three All-Region performers from last season in Dominique Clairmonte, Elly Henes and Beth Taye, who all finished in the top 10 at the 2017 Southeast Regional Championship to lead NC State to its first-place finish.
On the men's side, NC State finished fourth in the region in 2017 on the way to earning an at-large bid to the NCAA Championships. All-Region honoree Ian Shanklin, who finished 19th at the 2017 Southeast Regional Championship, will return for the Wolfpack men, as do three more of the Wolfpack's top-five finishers - Patrick Sheehan, Joe Bistritz and Ben Barrett - who also bring experience to the table for NC State's 2018 campaign.
The Wolfpack is scheduled to open 2018 competition at home as it hosts the adidas XC Challenge. The meet is scheduled for Friday, Sept. 14 at the WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary, N.C.
