RALEIGH – The No. 20 NC State women's soccer team is set to open its season Thursday when it travels to Navy for an 8 p.m. match at the Glenn Warner Soccer Facility in Annapolis, Md. Live streaming will be available on the Patriot League Network.
Series History
Thursday will mark the fifth time Navy and NC State have met in program history, as the Wolfpack owns a perfect 4-0-0 record over the Midshipmen. The squads last met on Aug. 28, 2016, at Dail Soccer Stadium, and NC State earned a 4-1 victory.
Preseason Top 25
NC State enters the 2018 regular season ranked in two preseason polls. The Wolfpack ranks 16th on TopDrawerSoccer and 20th on United Soccer Coaches.
The Pack finished the 2017 season among the national polls, ranking 16th on TopDrawerSoccer, 21st on United Soccer Coaches and 23rd on Soccer America.
NC State lost just one starter from last season due to graduation, as seven freshmen and one sophomore transfer make up the team's newcomers this season.
Preseason Awards
Thanks to an impressive sophomore campaign, Tziarra King has been named to the Preseason All-ACC Women's Soccer Team, MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List and TopDrawerSoccer's Preseason Best XI Second Team.
After earning First Team All-ACC honors last season she earned her first preseason nod, as she is one of 11 players that make up the team that was voted on by the league's head coaches.
She is one of 45 women that are included on the MAC Hermann Trophy Watch List, as it is the most prestigious individual award in college soccer and is presented annually to the most outstanding male and female players of the year.
Last season King was named to TDS's Best XI Third Team and ranked 26th on its Top 100 Players list, as TopDrawerSoccer's Preseason Best XI shapes out what is projected to be the best talent in the upcoming NCAA Division I women's soccer campaign.
King, as well as 2017 All-ACC selection Ricci Walkling, were featured on TopDrawerSoccer's Top 100 Players To Watch List. King checked in at No. 28 and Walking ranked No. 58.
Scouting Navy
Navy was picked first in the Patriot League's preseason poll after posting an 8-0-1 conference record in 2017 to make its seventh straight postseason appearance. Juniors Alex Jackson and Sydney Fortson garnered Preseason All-Patriot League Team Honors, while Jackson was named Preseason Defensive Player of the Year.
Last season Navy compiled a 16-4-1 record, as three of its four losses were against Power Five schools. Its season ended in the championship final of the Patriot League Tournament when it lost to Bucknell 3-2.
The Midshipmen return their top two strikers, Ash Fairow (13 goals) and Eleanor Pratt (9 goals), as they scored 50 percent of the team's goals last season. The Mids also return their top goalkeeper, Sydney Fortson, who started all 21 matches and finished the 2017 campaign with a .99 goals-against average.
