
Kemp, Henes Advance To NCAA Championships For 5,000M National Final

Total of three from NC State qualify for the NCAA Championships

TAMPA, Fla. - Erika Kemp and Elly Henes placed first and second in their respective heats of the 5,000m semifinal on the last day of competition at the NCAA East Preliminary Saturday evening, automatically qualifying for the NCAA Championships in Eugene, Ore.Â
Their qualifications brought NC State's total number of NCAA Championships entries to three. Kemp, Henes, and Lauren Evans (shot put) will travel to the national meet from June 6-9.Â
Kemp, a 5,000m All-American, advanced to the national final for the second season in a row and the third time in her storied NC State career. The Wolfpack senior maintained a lead in the pack of runners for the majority of the last 2,000 meters of the race and kicked things into high gear to close out, taking first in her heat in 16:06.17. Kemp's time was the fastest of all competitors across the two heats and was six seconds faster than the next best time.Â

Henes punched her ticket to what will be her first appearance at the NCAA Outdoor Championships. The 2018 ACC Champion in the 5,000m, Henes clocked a 16:15.24 at the NCAA East Preliminary to place second in her heat and earn an automatic spot at the NCAA Championships.

DISTANCE:Â
Ryen Frazier, who came in with the No. 41 5,000m mark in the region, finished 27th, crossing the finish line in 16:40.53.
Patrick Sheehan (14:35.08) and Joe Bistritz (14:51.74) competed on the men's side of the 5,000m but did not advance.Â
SPRINTS:
Gabriele Cunningham concluded her season in the 200m quarterfinals. The junior clocked a 23.59 to place 21st in the region.Â
The men's 4x100m relay squad of Will Hoffmann, Abdur Rahmaan Kelly, Cravont Charleston, and Shannon Patterson checked in at 40.94 but did not qualify to advance to the NCAA Championships.Â
JUMPS:
Michelle Cobb competed in the triple jump, ending her freshman season with a 39' 4.5" (12.00m) mark on her second attempt. Â
UP NEXT:
The Wolfpack's three national qualifiers will compete at the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships, which will be held at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field in Eugene. They will each be one of 24 competitors in their respective events who will be competing for a national title. More information about the national meet can be found here.
