Cunningham Advances To 200M Quarterfinal On Second Day Of NCAA East Preliminary

TAMPA, Fla. - Junior sprinter Gabriele Cunningham highlighted the Wolfpack's second day of action at the NCAA East Preliminary, as she advanced out of the first round of the 200m and qualified for her second quarterfinal of the regional meet Friday afternoon.

Despite storms rolling in and rain starting to fall as her heat began, Cunningham, NC State's 200m school record holder and the 2018 ACC runner-up in the event, clocked a 22.89 in the first round. She finished fourth in her heat, just a place way from automatically qualifying, but she posted the fastest time of all of the non-automatic qualifiers on the way to qualifying by time for a spot in the quarterfinal round. Cunningham will make her second career appearance in the 200m quarterfinals Saturday afternoon, having last advanced past the first round in 2016.

SPRINTS:
Cunningham also competed in the 100m Friday afternoon, making an appearance in the quarterfinal of the event for the second season in a row. She placed 18th in the region, turning in a time of 11.33.

Shannon Patterson ran the final individual race of his Wolfpack career, competing in the first round of the 200m. Patterson posted a time of 20.66 but was edged out of the final time qualifying spot by just one-hundredth of a second. The Wolfpack senior will be back in action Saturday afternoon as he runs a leg of the men's 4x100m relay.

DISTANCE:
Gavin Gaynor ran the 3,000m steeplechase as part of the nightcap on day two of the meet. He placed 13th in his heat in 9:21.13 to end his first season with the Wolfpack.

THROWS:
Tyson Fortenberry ended his season in the first round of the discus, where he placed 29th. His best throw of the outing measured in at 165' 2" (50.34m).

UP NEXT:
Saturday marks the final day of action at the NCAA East Preliminary, which will begin at 12:30 p.m. for the Wolfpack. Live video coverage will again be provided by FloTrack as NC State competes in the final rounds of the regional meet.
