Live Scoring
STILLWATER, OKLA. – The NC State men's golf team shot a first round score of four-over par Friday in a weather-marred opening round of the NCAA Championship held at Karsten Creek in Stillwater, Okla.
The Pack is currently in a tie for 14th place on the 30 team-leaderboard, but half the field did not complete its first round on Friday as two weather delays backed up the field.
Benjamin Shipp led the Pack with a first round score of two-under par 70. The Duluth, Ga., native had a strong close to his first round as he recorded a birdie on hole 15 and had an eagle on 18 to sit in a tie for 13th place on the individual leaderboard.
Harrison Rhoades is next for NC State at one-under par. The Raleigh native tied for team-high honors with five birdies on the day and was the only NC State golfer to have success on the opening nine holes as Rhoades made the turn at three-under par.
Stephen Franken shot a 75 in the first round. The ACC Player of the Year had only three holes worse than par on the day (tied with Shipp for lowest on the team), but a triple bogey and double bogey proved costly.
Easton Paxton shot a 76 in the first round for the Pack. Despite the four-over par performance, Paxton ended the round on a tear as he birdied five of the final seven holes on the day, playing the back-nine in three-under par.
Just Hood rounded out the NC State line-up with a 78.
NC State is scheduled to begin the second round Saturday at 2:37 p.m. CT.
NC State is currently in the stroke play portion of the finals. The NCAA Championship consists of three days of stroke play on Friday thru Sunday (54 holes), after which the top 15 teams and nine individuals not on an advancing team will be determined. That is followed by a final day of 18 holes of stroke play (Monday) to determine the top eight teams that will advance to match play as well as the 72-hole individual champion. The team national champion will be determined by a match-play format that will consist of quarterfinals and semifinals conducted on Tuesday, followed by the finals on Wednesday.
