INDIANAPOLIS– The NC State track and field program will send 18 competitors to the 2018 NCAA Division I East Preliminary Round, which will be hosted by the University of South Florida at the USF Track & Field Stadium in Tampa, Fla. from Thursday, May 24 through Saturday, May 26.
The meet acts as a gateway to the NCAA Division I Track & Field Championships, which will be held at the University of Oregon's Hayward Field in the beginning of June. The top 12 finishers in each event will advance to the NCAA Championships at the end of the preliminary rounds weekend.
Sprinter Gabriele Cunningham was the only member of the Wolfpack to earn a spot in two individual events, as she will compete in the 100m and the 200m. Cunningham is coming off of a silver-medal performance in the 200m at the ACC Championships.
On the men's side of the sprints, Cravont Charleston will compete in the 100m, and Shannon Patterson will compete in the 200m. Both men placed second in their respective events at the ACC Championships.
Six distance runners will represent the program across the men's and women's 5,000m races. Dominique Clairmonte, Elly Henes, Erika Kemp, and Ryen Frazier will compete for the Wolfpack women. Clairmonte, Henes, and Kemp head into the meet all with season-best times that stand in the top 12 of the region. Joe Bistritz and Patrick Sheehan will run the 5,000m for the men.
Gavin Gaynor (3,000m SC) and Elijah Moskowitz (10,000m) are also set to compete in distance races, while the mid-distance 1,500m race will see Megan Rempel and Anna Vess representing the women and Philip Hall representing the men.
NC State will also send four athletes to compete in field events. Michelle Cobb is the only Wolfpack jumper who will make the trip to Tampa to compete in the triple jump. Throwers Lauren Evans (SP), Joshua Davis (HT), and Tyson Fortenberry (DT) also qualified for the preliminary meet.
In addition to the 18 NC State athletes competing in individual events, the NC State men's 4x100m relay team qualified for the preliminary meet.
