Wolfpack Completes Second Day Of Action At ACC Outdoor Championships

CORAL GABLES, Fla. - NC State advanced three of its sprinters to the 100m finals, and two members of the Wolfpack claimed All-ACC honors on the second day of competition at the 2018 ACC Outdoor Championships at Cobb Stadium on the campus of the University of Miami.Â
Lauren Evans, a two-time All-ACC honoree from the 2018 indoor season, gained all-conference status for the first time in her outdoor track and field career. Competing in the shot put, Evans threw a season best 52' 6" (16.00m) on her penultimate attempt to be named to the Second Team All-ACC.Â
Rivers earned a spot on the Second Team All-ACC for the second year in a row following a fifth-place performance in the decathlon. The Wolfpack senior picked up two top-three performances in the final five events of the decathlon on the way to scoring a season-high 6,564 points.Â
Many members of the Wolfpack were also in action in the prelims of various events, looking for spots in the finals. NC State will be represented in the finals of 14 events on the last day of competition Saturday.
SPRINTS:
NC State will have three sprinters in the men's and women's 100m finals.
Cravont Charleston, the defending champion in the event, won his heat to earn the automatic qualifying spot, clocking in at 10.38. Shannon Patterson qualified by time with a 10.54, earning his second spot in a final after qualifying for the 200m final on Thursday.

Gabriele Cunningham advanced on the women's side of the 100m for the third season in a row. She also automatically qualified by placing first in her heat with a time of 11.54. Cunningham will compete in both the 100m and 200m finals Saturday evening.

Janel Pate ran an 11.99 in the women's 100m, her best time as a member of the Wolfpack, to check in at No. 10 on the all-time list of performances in the event.
Despite not advancing from the 400m prelims, Jada Griffin (55.06) and Tiana Patillo (55.10) both set new personal bests in the event Friday evening. Griffin moved to sixth in program history, while Patillo bettered her time that stands at seventh in program history.Â
THROWS:
Freshman Tyson Fortenberry threw three PRs in a row on his final attempts in the shot put. His best and final throw of the day, which was marked at 54' 7.5" (16.65m), placed ninth.Â
DISTANCE:Â
To end the second day of action, Gavin Gaynor (9:14.55) finished 12th in the men's steeplechase, and Rachel Bartolomeo (10:56.44) was NC State's top finisher in the women's steeplechase, placing 14th.Â
UP NEXT:
NC State will conclude its time at the ACC Championships with a full afternoon and evening of competition Saturday. The action kicks off at 3 p.m. with the men's discus final and the women's triple jump final, and the ACC Network Extra will broadcast the final events on the track beginning at 5 p.m.
