RALEIGH, N.C.– The No. 24 NC State men's tennis team (17-8) makes its return to the NCAA Men's Tennis Championships Friday afternoon as it takes on California (11-9) in the first round. The match is set for 2 p.m. EST and will be played at the Texas Tennis Center in Austin, Texas.
A win over the Golden Bears would advance the Wolfpack to the second round, where it would face the winner of the match between Texas, which is the regional host, and Bryant on Saturday at 4 p.m. EST.
WOLFPACK IN THE NCAA TOURNAMENT:
The 2018 edition of the NCAA Tournament marks NC State's ninth overall appearance in the tournament. The Pack last made the field of 64 in 2015 and last advanced past the first round in 2014.
The Wolfpack has advanced as far as the Elite Eight, which it reached in 2007. That year marked the only time in program history that NC State has moved past the first two rounds to reach the Sweet 16.
WOLFPACK IN THE RANKINGS:
NC State enters the NCAA Tournament ranked No. 24 as a team in the Oracle/ITA Rankings.
Alexis Galarneau and Igor Saveljic both jumped up in the singles rankings, where Galarneau checks in at No. 42 and Igor checks in at No. 118.
Two of NC State's doubles pairs are also ranked. Galarneau and Michael Ogden sit at No. 57, and Igor and Ivan Saveljic moved back into the rankings at No. 69.
The final set of rankings for the 2017-18 season will be released upon the conclusion of the NCAA Championships. Final team rankings come out on May 23, and final individual rankings will be released on May 30.
PACK RISING:
In Coach Spencer's first season at the helm of the program, the Wolfpack saw tremendous success. Since entering the rankings for the first time this season on Feb. 20, the Wolfpack has remained in the top 30 for 11 consecutive weeks and has found itself ranked in the top 25 for 10 of those 11 weeks.
During the regular season, NC State matched up against 13 opponents that earned bids to the NCAA Championships. The Wolfpack finished the regular season with a 16-7 record, posting its best win percentage since the 2012 season, and advanced to the quarterfinal round of the ACC Championships for the third-straight year.
As the ninth head coach in NC State's program history, Spencer is the first to lead his team to an NCAA Tournament berth in his first season.
GALARNEAU EARNS NCAA SINGLES BID:
In his second season as a member of the Wolfpack, Galarneau received an at-large selection to compete in the NCAA Men's Tennis Singles Championships. He is part of a field of 64 players that will compete in the single-elimination tournament, which takes place in Winston-Salem, N.C. from May 23-28 following the conclusion of the team championships. The bracket for the event is set to be released on May 22.
ACC ACCOLADES:
Galarneau and freshman Tadas Babelis were named to the 2018 All-ACC Men's Tennis Team, with Galarneau claiming a spot on the First Team and Babelis being named to the Third Team. The selections mark the sixth year in a row that NC State has received multiple all-conference honorees.
SCOUTING THE GOLDEN BEARS:
Friday marks the first ever meeting between NC State and California.
California makes its 19th-consecutive appearance in the team tournament, most recently coming off of a Sweet 16 berth to end its 2017 season.
The squad finished the 2018 regular season with an 11-8 mark and then fell to Oregon in the quarterfinal round of the Pac-12 Championships.
The Bears opened the spring ranked a season-high No. 19 for three weeks in a row, but they enter the national tournament ranked 34th. Billy Griffith is the only ranked singles player for California, checking in at No. 55. He and J.T. Nishimura pair up to form the nation's 33rd-ranked duo.
