RALEIGH – Despite Jade Caraway's two-out RBI double in the bottom of the seventh to knot the score at three and send the series finale to extra innings, the NC State softball team fell 5-3 (9) to Boston College on Sunday afternoon at Dail Stadium.
The Eagles sweep the weekend series and improve to 19-15 (8-3 ACC), while the Wolfpack falls to 20-19 (4-10 ACC) on the season.
How It Happened
-After four scoreless innings the Pack plated a run in the fifth to take a 1-0 lead. Angie Rizzi led off the frame with a base hit to left field, and with two outs on the board Lily Bishop was hit-by-pitch. Macauley Prickett pinch ran for Bishop at first, and after Jade Caraway hit a chopper to BC's second baseman Prickett beat the tag on a fielder's choice as Rizzi capitalized on the play and scored.
-The Eagles knotted the game in the sixth with a solo shot to right field.
-NC State answered in the bottom frame to take a 2-1 advantage. Cheyenne Balzer led off with a single to left field, her second hit of the game, and Sam Russ pinch ran for her. After a sacrifice bunt and groundout moved her to third, Russ scored on a fielder's choice to third base.
-In the seventh BC plated two runs to take a 3-2 lead. An error with runners on second and third brought the first run in, and a single to center field with runners at the corners allowed the other run to cross home plate.
-Caraway knotted the game in the bottom half with a two-out double, her seventh of the season, to the left center wall. Madeline Curtis hit a one-out single and an error advanced her to second where Brittany Nimmo entered to pinch run.
-In the top of the ninth inning after a leadoff single to left field, a two-out double to right center followed by an RBI single up the middle brought the insurance runs across to secure BC's sweep.
-Kama Woodall (6-7) relieved starter Devin Wallace in the eighth and took the loss after giving up the two earned runs in extras.
