Pack Edged By Pirates In Pitcher’s Duel, 2-1

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The NC State softball team was edged by East Carolina 2-1 on Wednesday evening at the ECU Softball Stadium. Starting pitcher Devin Wallace threw a complete game, scattering nine base hits while giving up one earned run in the tough luck loss.
The Wolfpack falls to 22-26 and the Pirates improve to 22-26 on the season.
How It Happened
-ECU started the bottom half of the first with a pair of walks on one out, but Alyssa Compton started a 6-4-3 play to end the inning.
-In the second the Pirates once again put pair of runners on thanks to a single through the right side and base hit up the middle, but Timberlyn Shurbutt turned the Pack's second inning-ending double play of the game.
-ECU took a 1-0 lead in the third. The leadoff batter reached on a bunt single, and a stolen base and sacrifice bunt moved her to third. A groundout to the pitcher's circle allowed her to score.
-In the fifth the Pirates tried to double its lead. A single through the left gap started the side, and after the runner advanced to second on a groundout to second she tried to score on a single through the right side but was out at home.
-The Pack attempted to score a run in the sixth when Compton drew a two-out walk and advanced to second on a wild pitch, but she was out at home when she tried to score on Chandley Garner's single to right field.
-NC State knotted the game at one in the seventh when pinch hitter Lily Bishop hit a solo home run to left field.
-The Pirates clinched the win in the bottom half on a walk off single. The leadoff batter reached on an error and a wild pitch and sacrifice bunt allowed her to start the threat.

-Five different players tallied base hits in the contest, as Bishop's homer was her fifth of the season
Up Next
NC State returns home this weekend for a non-conference series with UNCG. The teams will play a doubleheader Saturday at 4 and 6 p.m., and meet for the finale Sunday at 12 p.m. All three games will be contested at Dail Stadium and streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
