CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – A four-run second inning for UNC-Chapel Hill led to the NC State softball team dropping its series opener 6-0 on Friday evening at Anderson Stadium.
The Wolfpack falls to 21-20 (4-11 ACC) while the Tar Heels improve to 24-20 (12-4 ACC) on the season.
How It Happened
-The Heels took a one-run lead in the first inning. A Wolfpack error allowed UNC's leadoff batter to reach second, and a sacrifice bunt followed by a wild pitch plated the run.
-In the second inning UNC-CH extended its lead to five, scoring four runs on as many hits and an error. A pair of hit-by-pitches put runners on base and a groundout to the pitcher's circle started the threat. An infield single and error plated the first two runs, while a pair of RBI infield singles brought the other two across.
-The teams were held scoreless the next three and-a-half innings, and in the bottom of the sixth the Heels added another run on a double steal. A single through the left gap and walk put a pair of runners on, while a 6-4 fielder's choice put runners at the corners to start the threat.
Inside The Box Score
-Timberlyn Shurbutt led the team with a 2-for-3 performance at the plate.
-Cheyenne Balzer led off the second with a double up the left field line for her eighth of the season.
-Devin Wallace (11-10) threw her 11th complete game of the season as she gave up six hits and three earned runs while striking out four.
Up Next
NC State will look to even the series Saturday when the teams meet for game two of the weekend. First pitch is 1 p.m. at Anderson Stadium and the game will be streamed on the ACC Network Extra.
