Sophomore finished the week with a .545 batting average
GREENSBORO, N.C. – After helping NC State baseball to a perfect 5-0 week, including the program's first-ever sweep at Clemson, Will Wilson has been named ACC Player of the Week, announced Monday by the conference office.
Â
The sophomore shortstop turned in a stellar week at the plate, as he compiled a .545 batting average with 12 hits, seven runs, five runs batted in (RBI), three doubles and two home runs.
Â
He finished the weekend series against the Tigers with a .500 batting average, the highest for an individual on either team and tallied a series-high six hits.
Â
On Sunday, Wilson recorded his first career multi-home run game, giving NC State a 1-0 lead with a solo shot in the first and smashed a go-ahead homer in the eighth to put the Wolfpack ahead 5-4, which proved to be the difference.
Â
The Kings Mountain, N.C., native recorded more than one hit in each game of the week and now has eight multi-hit games this season. He has also reached base safely in 36 consecutive games dating back to the first game of the Delaware series last season.
Â
Against UNC Asheville on Tuesday, Wilson tallied his second four-hit performance of the season. His impressive week at the plate lifted his season average from .291 to .364, which is the second best on the team.
Â
For the week, he had a slugging percentage of .955 and an on-base percentage of .600, as he also drew three walks during the week. Defensively, he had 12 assists in the field with seven putouts, helping NC State turn three double plays.
Â
Following the program's first-ever sweep at Clemson and first against the Tigers since 1997, NC State has improved 13 spots in the Baseball America Top-25 poll to No. 10 and 11 spots in the D1Baseball Poll to No. 13.
Â
The Wolfpack moves to No. 6 in the Perfect Game Poll and No. 8 in Collegiate Baseball to garner a pair of top-10 listings.
Â
NC State is back in action this weekend when the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets head to Raleigh for a three-game series. Friday's game is slated for 6:30 p.m. at Doak Field at Dail Park.
