Wolfpack pitching staff limits UNC Asheville to just three hits
RALEIGH, N.C. – Four different Wolfpack pitchers combined to limit UNC Asheville to just three hits, all singles, as the 23rd-ranked NC State baseball team earned a 6-2 win against the Bulldogs Wednesday afternoon at Doak Field at Dail Park.
Â
After UNC Asheville grabbed a 1-0 lead, NC State countered with six unanswered runs en route to its second win against the Bulldogs in as many days. Freshman Reid Johnston earned the win on the mound for the Wolfpack with 2.2 hitless innings of relief, while UNCA's Blake Brown was hit with the loss.

NC State moves to 15-3 on the year, while UNC Asheville falls to 3-13.

Avent's Additions
Overall thoughts...
"We've played 18 games in 27 days and this might be one of the coldest starts to the season that I can remember," said head coach Elliott Avent. "What they've done through the first 18 games has been amazing and I'm just really proud of this group. They've battled through some injuries and youth and they've stayed on top of their academics and it's been impressive.
Â
"Yesterday and today were really cold and we only gave up two runs today to a team that scored 11 on us yesterday. Now we head down to Clemson to play one of the hottest teams in the country."
Â
Quick Hits
- Jack Conley ignited the Wolfpack's offense in the fourth with a single through the left side and Dillon Cooper followed with a single to put runners on first and second.
- Freshman J.T. Jarrett drove in Conley from second base with a single to left field, as the Pack knotted the game at one.
- NC State took a 3-1 lead in the sixth after Josh McLain doubled down the left field line with the bases loaded to score Shane Shepard and Conley.
- In the seventh, Will Wilson led off with a double to left field and scored on an RBI single by Brock Deatherage.
- Cooper picked up a pair of RBI with a single through the left side to extend NC State's advantage to 6-1.
- UNC Asheville looked to rally in the top of the ninth, but Wolfpack reliever Kent Klyman got a big double play ball to limit the Bulldogs to just one unearned run in the frame.
Â
Inside the Box Score
- Cooper and Wilson were the only two players in the contest to record more than one hit, as each was 2-for-4 in the game.
- McLain hit his team-leading eighth double in the sixth, which ties as the most by an individual in the ACC.
- NC State pitchers held UNC Asheville to a 2-for-16 clip at the plate with runners on base and the Bulldogs were 1-for-7 with runners in scoring position.
- Wilson's walk in the first extended his reached base safely streak to 33 games, dating back to last season.
Â
On the Mound
- Freshman David Harrison started on the mound for the Pack and struggled with his command a little but struck out five batters and allowed just one hit.
- Johnston entered the contest next and threw 2.2 hitless and scoreless innings to record the win, improving to 2-0.
- Nick Swiney worked two no-hit innings on the hill before turning it over to Klyman to close it out.
