RALEIGH – Led by a pair of home runs and three RBI from Lily Bishop, the NC State softball team earned its first shutout win of the season on Wednesday as it defeated Elon 7-0 at Dail Stadium.
The Wolfpack improves to 6-4 on the season while the Phoenix fall to 7-4.
RYCHCIK'S REVIEW
"I think we had a really good game today," said head coach Shawn Rychcik. "We had a plan of how to attack their starting pitcher (Kiandra Mitchum) and I think we did a good job of executing it. We've had some troubles in the past with her changeup and I thought our plan allowed us to capitalize and swing at some of the harder pitches she threw.
"I was pretty happy with our offense. We had 10 hits in six innings of at-bats and executed our game plan pretty well. We have to continue to get better and mature with some of our at-bats, but overall we're constantly improving and I'm happy with how our hitters did today."
HOW IT HAPPENED
-NC State grabbed a 2-0 lead in the second inning. After Natalie Jones hit a one-out single to right center and Jade Caraway hit a two-out double to left field, Sam Russ hit a ground ball to Elon's first baseman who tried to stop Jones from scoring from third but she managed to beat the tag for the first run.
-In the next at-bat Russ stole second and then a throwing error by Elon's catcher allowed her to advance to third and Caraway to cross home plate.
-In the third inning Lily Bishop hit a solo shot to left field, the first of her career, to extend the Pack's lead to three.
-In the sixth inning Bishop hit her second home run of the game, a two-run blast to left center to give her team a 5-0 lead. Chandley Garner and Jones followed with back-to-back outfield singles, and then Caraway cleared the bases with her first triple of the season to the center field wall to tack on two more runs.
INSIDE THE BOX SCORE
-Kama Woodall and Devin Wallace combined for the shutout in the circle as Woodall pitched two innings and Wallace threw the final five. They gave up a combined seven hits off of the 31 batters they faced. Wallace picked up the win, improving to 3-2 on the season.
-In Jones's first start of the season she went 2-for-2 at the plate, scoring two runs. Bishop went 2-for-3 on the day with two runs and three RBI, while Caraway was 3-for-4 with two RBI and one run.
-Russ had two stolen bases in the game, giving her a team-best four on the year.
