
U.S. Olympic Trials Cuts, Program Record Highlight Pack’s Time at Winter Nationals

GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Wolfpack wrapped up a successful four days of competition at USA Swimming's Winter National Championships as five swimmers (three current student-athletes and two NC State alumni) posted times that qualify them for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
Freshman Sophie Hansson also added an impressive performance and built upon her successful rookie campaign as she set a new program record in the 100-meter breaststroke.
Hansson won her heat with a time of 1:08.60 and went on to swim the program's fastest long course meter time in the event in the A final. The Helsingborg, Sweden native touched the wall in 1:08.14 on the way to winning silver with her performance in the finals. Hansson also impressed in the 200-meter breaststroke, taking fifth in the prelims in 2:31.08.
NC State's first swim of the meet saw junior Ky-lee Perry notch an Olympic Trials cut in the 50-meter freestyle. Perry took eighth place in the prelims Thursday morning with a time of 25.65.
Makayla Sargent went on to start the third day of competition on a strong foot as she posted an Olympic Trials cut in the 400-meter individual medley. Sargent won her heat by a body length in 4:45.02 to post the second-fastest time in the preliminary heats, and she went on to place fourth overall in the A final Friday evening.
NC State continued to display its strength in the backstroke events as both of its swimmers who competed in the 100-meter backstroke touched the wall within the Olympic Trails standard. Junior Coleman Stewart took sixth in the prelims in 55.58 and alumni Hennessey Stuart placed eighth in 56.12.
NC State alumnus and NCAA champion Anton Ipsen secured a podium finish in the 1500-meter freestyle. The Birkerod, Denmark native already owns the program record in the event, and he clocked a 15:15.32 to take second place.
Wolfpack alumna Hannah Moore finished just off of the podium in the 1500-meter freestyle. She placed fourth with a time of 16:32.50, which qualifies her for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Team Trials.
Freshman Zach Brown narrowly missed the Olympic Trials cut in the 200-meter butterfly but put together a solid performance to take third place in the prelims in 2:01.56.
In addition to Hansson and Ipsen, Nyls Korstanje (Nijmegen, Netherlands), Andreas Vazaios (Athens, Greece) and Mackenzie Glover (Winnipeg, Canada) also competed as visitors at the Winter National Championships.
Korstanje secured a pair of top-five finishes in the prelims as he took second place in the 100-meter freestyle (49.99) and fourth place in the 50-meter freestyle (22.68).
Vazaios and Glover both placed eighth in the preliminary heats of their respective events. Vazaios won his heat of the 200-meter freestyle after powering his way to the lead in the second half of the race to touch the wall in 1:52.20. Glover clocked a 2:14.71 200-backstroke time.
NC State's swimmers will resume intercollegiate competition on Saturday, Jan. 19 as the Wolfpack hosts its home opener against UNC-Chapel Hill. That meet is scheduled for an 11 a.m. start from the Willis R. Casey Aquatic Center.
