RALEIGH, N.C. -Â On a night when NC State will honor 19 seniors, one of its greatest defensive players and the military, the No. 22 Wolfpack will also face off against its oldest football rival.
In what will be the 112th meeting between the two in-state neighbors, the Pack (6-2, 3-2 ACC) entertains Wake Forest (4-5, 1-4) Thursday night in a nationally televised contest from Carter-Finley Stadium.
Game time is 7:30, and the game will be televised nationally on ESPN.
Â
Although the Wolfpack has another home game, a December 1 match-up with East Carolina that was added after the September 15 game against West Virginia was cancelled because of Hurricane Florence, NC State is sticking with the original plan of celebrating Senior Night on Thursday.
Fourteen of the 19 seniors who will be honored prior to the game are either current starters or players who have made numerous starts in their careers.
"They're incredibly special," said NC State head coach Dave Doeren. "All of them have unique stories for their journeys. As a head coach or a position coach, I always felt that when you recruit a young man, take him through his last game and his graduation, that you've done your job as far as serving him. It's a great moment to share with their parents on the field."
Adding to the ceremonial atmosphere on Thursday will be recognition bestowed upon former defensive end Bradley Chubb, NC State's all-time leader in sacks and tackles for loss. Chubb, the fifth overall pick in last April's NFL Draft by the Broncos, will have his No. 9 jersey honored between the first and second quarters.
"I'm excited for Bradley and his family because they'll be here with him," Doeren said. "He's earned this and he continues to earn an incredible name for himself and his family. He has a lot of love for NC State and this program. For him to take his bye week and come back and be a part of this, it's special."
The last time NC State played a Thursday night game in Raleigh, last October against a nationally ranked Louisville squad, the atmosphere was electric. Doeren is hoping for more of the same in this game as the Wolfpack continues its quest to post the school's first unbeaten season at home since 1986.
A rowdy environment could be especially helpful against a Wake Forest team that lost its starting quarterback for the season. In last weekend's 41-24 loss to Syracuse, freshman QB Sam Hartman suffered a leg injury which has forced coach Dave Clawson to explore his options. Hartman's backup, Kendall Hinton, has also been hobbled, although Wake Forest listed him as 'available' earlier in the week.
Redshirt sophomore Jamie Newman, who has thrown just 15 passes for the Deacs this season and was offered a scholarship by NC State out of high school, will be making his first road start on Thursday.
"We need our fans up, out of their seats on third down and in the red zone with our defense on the field," Doeren said.
Newman will no doubt try to get the ball in the hands of Greg Dortch, one of the league's most productive receivers and return men. The slot receiver has caught 69 balls in nine games with an average of 94 yards per contest. He also averages 22 yards per kick return.
"He's going to get his touches," Doeren said. "He's a phenomenal football player. He plays with energy, he's got great acceleration and change of direction, he catches the ball well and he's hard to bring down. It's a match-up issue for anyone who plays against them."
The home team in this ancient series has prevailed in 18 of the last 20 meetings. The Wolfpack has taken 15 of the last 16 games against the Deacs at Carter-Finley Stadium. Wake's only victory during that stretch came in 2006.
A Senior Night celebration is not complete without a victory to put icing on the cake.
"The experiences I've had here, I really wouldn't change anything," said graduate quarterback Ryan Finley. "As it's winding down, I just want to enjoy it with friends and family. It's going to be fun."
The Wolfpack Sports Network begins pregame coverage Thursday with the Lowe's Foods Countdown to Kickoff at 5:30. Shorty after 6:30, veteran color analyst Johnny Evans will take questions about Wolfpack football on 'Ask the Analyst.' Send Johnny a question on Twitter@pack radio or by clicking HERE.
