CANCUN, Mexico – For the third time in the last six seasons, the 15th-ranked NC State women's basketball team began a season with a spotless 6-0 record after defeating reigning Atlantic 10 champion George Washington 69-61 Friday afternoon in both teams' final game of the 2018 Cancun Challenge at the Hard Rock Hotel Riviera Maya.
NC State was led by 21 points and 11 rebounds from junior guard Grace Hunter, who recorded her second double-double in as many days. She was joined in double figures by Elissa Cunane (18 points on 6-7 shooting) and Erika Cassell, who tied her new career high of 12 points that she initially set in the Nov. 22 win over Michigan State. Senior DD Rogers pulled down 10 rebounds during a game in which the Wolfpack absolutely dominated the Colonials on the glass, 48-22.
Mei-Lyn Bautista led George Washington with 19 points. She was joined in double figures by Kelsi Mahoney (16) and Neila Luma (14). The Colonials only shot 24-61 (.393) from the field on Friday, but made 11 three-pointers during the game.
NC State shot 8-16 (.500) from the field in the first quarter to cruise out to an early 21-12 advantage, but the Colonials went 8-15 (.533) in the second quarter to cut into the Wolfpack's lead. Led by 12 points from Hunter and 10 from Cassell, NC State took a 35-31 lead into the halftime break. The Wolfpack dominated the glass, outrebounding George Washington 23-10 and scoring eight second-chance points in the process. Rogers led all players in the first half with seven rebounds.
Bautista hit a three to pull the Colonials within one point (35-34) right at the start of the third quarter. NC State continued to keep George Washington at bay, as the Colonials got within one point on five occasions during the period. Cunane played a huge role during this critical stretch, going on a solo 8-0 run during which she sank six free throws and made one field goal to extend NC State's lead to 55-46 with 42 seconds remaining in the third quarter. She continued this run into the fourth quarter, hitting the first bucket of the period to give the Wolfpack a 57-46 lead.
George Washington would come no closer than within four points during the entire fourth quarter.
NC State now returns home to Raleigh for three straight games. The Wolfpack will first host a strong Michigan team in the 2018 ACC/B1G Challenge at Reynolds Coliseum on Thursday, Nov. 29.
