NC State uses explosive third quarter to cruise to victory over Anderson University
November 1, 2018
RALEIGH – The 17th-ranked NC State women's basketball team earned a comfortable victory over Anderson University in its lone exhibition of the season, defeating the visiting Trojans 83-57 Thursday evening inside Reynolds Coliseum.
Junior Aislinn Konig led all Wolfpack players with 14 points on 5-11 shooting (4-9 from distance). She was joined in double figures by junior transfer student Grace Hunter (13 points), freshman Elissa Cunane (12), and Erika Cassell (11). Hunter completed a double-double with 11 rebounds and graduate student Kiara Leslie also pulled down 10 rebounds to go with her seven points and five assists. Sophomores Kai Crutchfield (eight points, six assists) and Kayla Jones (eight points, eight rebounds) also had very productive games. Anderson's Ace Easter led all players in the game with 24 points on 9-17 shooting and was the lone Trojan to score in double figures.
NC State dominated the boards by a 57-35 margin and was quite efficient on the offensive end, scoring 33 field goals on 24 assists. The Wolfpack swiped 11 steals and forced the Trojans into 18 total turnovers.
Holding a 37-29 lead at halftime, NC State hit five three-pointers and scored 30 points during a terrific third quarter to extend its lead to 67-46.
"I'm really proud of how we came out in the second half and put up 30 points in the third quarter," NC State head coach Wes Moore said in the postgame press conference. "I thought we moved the ball better and we played a bit harder. We got the ball inside some and got some touches by our post players. We've got to learn to play hard for 40 minutes if we're going to have success. I like the fact that we had 24 assists and 12 turnovers. We did a good job of sharing the ball."
"Coach Moore told me to calm down (at halftime) and let the offense come to me," Hunter said. "Don't try to rush things, because it's been a long time (since my last game at Charlotte during the 2016-17 season)."
"I think we started off really slow, but started picking up after halftime once we got all the jitters out," Konig said. "Then we got going and in rhythm and personally I really enjoyed the second half when we were playing as a team and together more than the first half."
The Wolfpack cruised down the stretch, outscoring the Trojans 16-11 in the fourth quarter to claim the comfortable win.
NC State officially opens the 2018-19 season on Wednesday, Nov. 7 when Belmont comes to town. The Bruins are receiving votes in the AP top-25 poll to currently rank 35th in the nation. Tip-off between the Wolfpack and Bruins is scheduled for 7 pm from Reynolds Coliseum with live video coverage provided by ACC Network Extra.
