DURHAM, N.C. – The NC State swimming and diving teams earned their second victories of the season as both the men's and women's squads each won all but one of their swimming events on the way to defeating Duke at the Taishoff Aquatics Pavilion Saturday afternoon.
The 11th-ranked Wolfpack women set six pool records on the way to beating No. 22 Duke by a 196-104 score, and the No. 4 NC State men took the meet by a 198-102 decision over the Blue Devils. The Pack saw its swimmers sweep nine events across the men and the women. Both Wolfpack squads improve to 2-0 on the season and 1-0 in conference action with the wins.
QUOTING THE COACHES:
Head coach Braden Holloway
"I wanted to see a good environment today, good energy on the deck, and we brought a good environment. Our parent group and our alumni up in the stands did a great job of creating a good atmosphere for the meet.
"We had some good performances. Our ladies once again showed a good bit of range and depth. Ky-lee Perry continues to be a big player for us in the sprints. Our lady backstrokers and breaststrokers are showing a lot of depth. The biggest highlight was Makayla Sargent's day, getting three wins. She's a trooper. She goes at it every day and handles the intensity on a daily basis very well.
"On the men's side, we had some guys step up. Jack McIntyre had a great day for us. Giovanni Izzo got a look in the breaststroke, which was good. With the guys, we're still challenging them to see others step up. We look forward to new days to create new opportunities."
Head diving coach Yahya Radman
"We did well diving against a very competitive ACC team. We have a good baseline of where we need to be moving forward. These next two weeks are going to be critical in setting ourselves up for the end of the season. Madeline (Kline) and James (Brady) will prepare for the ACC/Big Ten Challenge, and the next time our other divers are on the boards will be at the IU Invite. I'm hoping to see a very different team with a more difficult list the next time out."
RELAY HIGHLIGHTS:
The Pack opened the meet by breaking the pool record in the women's 200-yard medley relay. Elise Haan, Anna Shumate, Sirena Rowe and Ky-lee Perry teamed up to touch the wall in 1:39.41 for a first-place finish. The women went on to notch another pool record-breaking time in the 200-yard freestyle relay to end the meet, as Haan, Kylee Alons, Rowe and Perry finished in 1:30.88.
The men followed suit with wins on their side of the events. Coleman Stewart, Daniel Graber, Giovanni Izzo and Justin Ress picked up the medley relay victory in 1:27.40, and Jacob Molacek, Cobe Garcia, Noah Hensley, and Ress won the freestyle relay in 1:19.91.
TOP INDIVIDUAL PERFORMERS:
Makayla Sargent impressed with three individual wins as the Wolfpack women's leading scorer. After picking up two first-place finishes in last week's season opener, the NC State junior opened her meet by dropping time in the 200-yard butterfly, touching the wall in 1:58.18. Sargent earned her second 500-yard freestyle win of the season in 4:50.58 and then went on to post a pool record with a dominant performance in the 400-yard individual medley (4:11.64), the nation's second-fastest time in the event this season and an NCAA B cut.
Sophie Hansson remains unbeaten in the individual breaststroke events through the first two weeks of the season, as she picked up another sweep in the meet against the Blue Devils. She won the 100-yard breaststroke in pool record time (1:01.40) and went on to take the victory in the 200-yard breaststroke (2:14.45).
Ky-lee Perry also picked up a pair of individual wins, setting pool records in both the 50-yard (22.35) and 100-yard (48.99) freestyle events.

Jacob Molacek earned his first wins of the season, as he opened his outing by taking first place in the 200-yard freestyle with a time of 1:37.15. He went on to win the 100-yard freestyle in 44.18.
Nyls Korstanje continued to prove himself as one of the nation's fastest swimmers in the early stages of the season as he picked up a win in the 50-yard freestyle with another sub-20 second race. He dropped time from his career debut to record an NCAA B mark, clocking in at 19.90 for the first-place finish.
Swimming the 100-yard butterfly for the first time this season, Giovanni Izzo met the NCAA B standard with a 47.69 for the win. Coleman Stewart, who clocked an NCAA B cut in the 100-yard backstroke at the last meet, picked up another win in the event and set a pool record of his own with a 46.26 mark.
