RALEIGH – The NC State softball team defeated Elon 7-4 (10-inn) on Friday evening at Dail Softball Stadium.
Elon scored in the second inning on a single to third after loading the bases with a pair of walks and an error. Three innings later the Pack took a 2-1 advantage with Timberlyn Shurbutt's two-run home run to right field.
In the seventh the Phoenix took a 4-2 lead with a bases clearing double, but the Pack responded in the bottom frame with a two-RBI double to right field from Haylee Kobziak followed by Angie Rizzi's two-run shot to left field.
Skylar Johnston tacked on the final run in the 10th with an RBI double to left field.
Five different players tallied at least one hit, led by Johnston's pair of doubles and Brigette Nordberg's two base hits. The two home runs by Kobziak and Rizzi kept the team's streak alive of hitting at least one homer in every game this fall.
Sydney Nester threw the first six innings in the circle for the Pack, giving up one run while striking out 12 batters. Devin Wallace gave up the three runs in the seventh, and was replaced by Kama Woodall with no outs in the frame. Woodall got the win as she didn't allow a hit the rest of the contest.
The team will wrap up its fall schedule Saturday when it travels to Duke for a 10-inning game. First pitch is 4 p.m. at Duke Softball Stadium in Durham, N.C. Admission is free.
