RALEIGH – The NC State swimming and diving programs will kick off their 2018-19 campaigns Friday afternoon as both the men and the women head to Columbia, S.C. for a road dual with South Carolina. The meet is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start inside the Carolina Natatorium, with the first diving session to begin at 3 p.m.
PACK IN THE POLLS:
Both NC State squads find themselves ranked in the national top 15 to start the season, as the College Swimming Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) released its preseason poll Wednesday. The Wolfpack men are ranked No. 4 overall, and the Pack women landed at a tie for No. 11 in the nation.
2017-18 REWIND:
The Wolfpack men enter the 2018-19 season after a historic 2017-18 campaign, which saw the team finish fourth at the NCAA Championships for the third year in a row. The squad claimed national titles in five events, the most national championships in a single year in program history. After a strong regular season, the Pack won conference titles in 14 swimming events on the way to taking gold at the ACC Championships for the fourth year in a row.
NC State's women finished the 2017-18 season ranked No. 11 in the final national poll of the season and earned their fifth-straight top-20 finish at the NCAA Championships. The team saw its members garner 15 combined All-America honors at the national meet. The Wolfpack women won gold in four events at the ACC Championships on the way to placing third.
THE PACK IS BACK:
Coming off of last season's success, NC State boasts a solid group of returners who made impacts for the Wolfpack in 2017-18 and will look to do the same in 2018-19.
On the men's side, NC State returns four of its swimmers who won national titles at the 2018 NCAA Championships, including individual titlists Andreas Vazaios, who is also the reigning ACC Men's Swimmer of the Year, and Coleman Stewart. Jacob Molacek enters the 2018-19 season as the highest returning point scorer in the nation after picking up gold medals in the 400 and 800 freestyle relays and finishing in the top five in multiple other events. Overall, six of the Pack's returners gained All-American status last season.
NC State's men will look to continue to make noise in the ACC, as gold medalists Justin Ress (200 freestyle), Stewart (100 and 200 backstroke) and Vazaios (200 IM) return to the team and aim to add to their lists of honors.
The Wolfpack women will also return an experienced group, as seven of NC State's All-Americans from last season will be back to lead the Pack. Elise Haan (100 backstroke) and Madeline Kline (platform diving) each picked up individual golds at the 2018 ACC Championships, and Ky-lee Perry, who won the 50 freestyle at the 2017 ACC Championships, returns as the conference's fastest swimmer in that event.
Haan enters the season as the fastest returner in the ACC in all three backstroke distances. Many other Wolfpack women stand as top-five returners in the conference in their respective events, including Tamila Holub, who ranks first in the 1650 freestyle, and Julia Poole, who stands atop the ACC returners in the 200 IM.
In addition to its strong groups of returners, NC State has bolstered both of its rosters with the addition of some of the sport's top incoming talent who will look to add to the Wolfpack's success under head coach Braden Holloway.
SCOUTING THE GAMECOCKS:
The South Carolina men finished 17th overall at the NCAA Championships in 2018 and ended the 2017-18 season just outside of the national top 25 as the team received votes in the final TYR/CSCAA Division I poll. South Carolina's women earned a 20th-place finish at last season's NCAA Championships, marking the squad's first top-20 finish since 2004.
The outing will mark the first time under Holloway's leadership that the Wolfpack matches up against the Gamecocks for a dual meet. The programs last swam against each other in a dual meet in 2006.
