RALEIGH – The Wolfpack is set to continue fall competition as it makes the short trip to Cary, N.C. for the 2018 ITA Carolina Regional Championship. The tournament runs Friday through Tuesday at the Cary Tennis Park, and it will feature players from programs across North and South Carolina.
The singles finalists and doubles champions from the region will advance to the season-ending 2018 Oracle ITA National Fall Championships, which is set for Nov. 7-11 in Surprise, Ariz.
Eight members of the Wolfpack will be in action in Cary this weekend. Seniors Michael Ogden, Igor Saveljic and Ivan Saveljic will return to the regional tournament, as will sophomores Tristan Smith and Collin Shick, who made their career debuts at the 2017 edition of the event. Tadas Babelis and Robert Turzak, who joined the Wolfpack last spring, and Joseph Schrader, who redshirted last season, will play at the ITA Carolina Regional for the first time in their NC State careers.
2017 ITA CAROLINA REGIONAL REWIND:
The Wolfpack made impressive runs through both the singles and doubles draws at last year's regional.
Igor made the deepest singles run for the Wolfpack. His journey to the quarterfinals included a win against South Carolina's No. 28 Gabriel Friedrich, the first top-30 win of his career. Ivan also put together a solid singles performance, winning three matches over the course of the weekend, all in straight sets, to earn a spot in the Round of 16.
In doubles, Ogden partnered with Alexis Galarneau to post a 5-1 record on the weekend on the way to reaching the title match.
LAST TIME OUT:
All eight of NC State's players who are set to play at the ITA Carolina Regional qualified for competition at the ITA All-American Championships at the beginning of the month. At the All-American Championships, Igor and Ivan earned an automatic berth in the main draw of doubles at the national tournament, and Igor advanced out of the qualifiers to the singles main draw.
FRIDAY'S SCHEDULE:
Competition begins at 9:30 a.m. Friday morning with the first two rounds of singles matches on slate. The scheduled start times for the Wolfpack's first round matches are as follows:
