CARY, N.C. – The NC State men's soccer team dropped a difficult 1-0 decision to No. 5 UNC-Chapel Hill Friday evening in front of a large crowd at WakeMed Soccer Park in Cary. The Wolfpack mustered a late rally of three shots on target during the final 11 minutes of the match, but a 40th-minute penalty converted by the Tar Heels proved to be the difference in the contest.
"You always have to be honest with your team, and the message to the team tonight is that I thought we were very disciplined against an excellent Carolina team," NC State head coach George Kiefer said. "It's definitely a match that we can build from, for sure."
The Tar Heels (10-1-0, 4-0-0 ACC) controlled a majority of the possession in the first half but were stymied time and again by solid defending and three important saves from freshman goalkeeper Leon Krapf. They took a 1-0 advantage in the 40th minute via a controversial penalty call in which freshman defender David Norris was judged to have brought down a Carolina forward in the area. Cam Lindley stepped up to the spot and converted the penalty to give the hosts a 1-0 lead which they would carry into the halftime break.
"I thought that two of the saves Leon made this evening, not a lot of freshman goalkeepers are making those," Kiefer said. "He's a good player and I'm very happy we have him. He's been doing this consistently and is a high-level goalkeeper. In these games, no matter how good you are, you're going to give up a chance here or there, and to have him play the way he is playing, I'm very happy with him."
NC State generated three quality scoring opportunities during the final 11 minutes of the match. Manny Perez hit a hard shot from inside 10 yards in the 80th minute, but UNC-Chapel Hill goalkeeper Alec Smir made a solid save. Just seconds later, senior Julius Duchscherer headed one on target from 10 yards away, but Smir tipped it over and out for a Wolfpack corner.
The Wolfpack (4-4-1, 1-3-0 ACC) had one more great chance in the 84th minute when a patient build up led to Perez having another chance inside ten yards. His shot was well placed, but Smir once again made an important save to deny the match-tying goal.
NC State returns to action at home on Tuesday, Oct. 3 when Belmont comes to town. Kickoff between the Wolfpack and Bruins is scheduled for 7 p.m. from Dail Soccer Stadium in Raleigh with live video coverage provided by ACC Network Extra.
