NC State records fourth clean sheet of the season
October 3, 2017
RALEIGH – The NC State men's soccer team (5-4-1) picked up its fifth home win of the season Tuesday evening, defeating visiting Belmont by a final score of 3-0.
The Wolfpack dominated the run of play and out-shot the Bruins (3-4-2) by a significant 13-1 margin. Ade Taiwo led all players with five shots and he was one of six NC State players to record at least one shot throughout the match.
Tanner Roberts, David Loera, and Taiwo scored the Wolfpack's three goals on Tuesday evening. Junior Simon Blotko frequently found teammates with good passes throughout the evening, registering two assists.
Roberts found the back of the net for his team-leading fourth goal of the season in the 51st minute. Tyler Gabarra found an open Blotko near the sideline and the junior defender whipped a nice cross into the penalty area which Roberts met with his head and directed over goalkeeper Alex Seeley.
Loera scored the first goal of his career less than eight minutes later. Following a foul in NC State's defensive area, senior Caleb Duvernay lofted in a high free kick. With his back facing the goal and positioned just outside the Belmont penalty area, Roberts nodded the ball down into the path of Loera. The freshman briefly possessed the ball and then fired an impressive shot from 22 yards out that beat Seeley to the left post.
For the third and final goal of the evening, Blotko found Stephen Elias streaking down the right wing in the 86th minute. Elias sent a low cross through the penalty area to Taiwo, who took a touch and finished from 10 yards to score his first goal since a September 2016 knee surgery.
Freshman goalkeeper Leon Krapf was not forced into a save Tuesday evening, but he collected numerous Bruin crosses to prevent dangerous scoring opportunities.
NC State returns to action on Friday, Oct. 6 when it travels to Syracuse for a road ACC match. Kickoff between the Wolfpack and Orange is scheduled for 7 p.m. with live coverage provided by ACC Network Extra.
