RALEIGH – The No. 25 NC State women's soccer team battled to a 0-0 2OT draw with third-ranked Virginia on Friday evening at Dail Soccer Stadium to open the ACC portion of its schedule, extending its unbeaten streak to four matches.
The Wolfpack moves to 6-1-1 (0-0-1 ACC), marking its first draw since October 2016 at Louisville, while the Cavaliers move to 5-2-1 (0-0-1 ACC) on the season.
HIGHLIGHTS
COACH SANTORO'S TAKE
"Anytime you get a point against one of the top teams in our league and in the country, you take it," said head coach Tim Santoro. "There's some things we need to fix but we kept a lot of stuff that they did outside of the danger areas. They had a couple of good chances, but I think we had a couple in the first half that we could have done better with."
HOW IT HAPPENED
Despite Virginia outshooting the Pack 21-5, NC State's defense was a key component in the result. Sydney Wootten played the full 110 minutes in goal, and was forced to make six saves in the contest for her third shutout of the season.
Neither team was able to create scoring opportunities in the first 10 minutes of the contest, but UVa recorded five quick shots in the next seven. Lulu Guttenberger and Tziarra King tallied one shot apiece in the first half while Hannah Keogh recorded one in the second half on a free kick from 18 yards.
In the first overtime period, NC State threatened twice with a shot by King that missed high and header by Taylor Porter that was saved. In the final 10 minutes of the contest UVa produced three chances, as two of them were saved by Wootten.
