Pack Closes Out Virginia Challenge with Event Wins

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The NC State track and field team wrapped up its weekend at the Virginia Challenge with several event wins and post-season qualifying marks.
Distance/Mid-Distance:
Erika Kemp led the way for the Wolfpack and continued her undefeated season with a win in the 5,000m. Kemp crossed the finish line in 15:41.23 to set the NCAA's fourth-fastest time this season. The time is a 16-second PR and moves her past Julie Shea to second on NC State's 5,000m list – just eight seconds from Betty Springs' school record of 15:33.43.
Kemp is having a breakout season, after missing the last outdoor season due to injury. This season, Kemp has raced three times in three different events and won all three races, while setting personal bests in two of the three races. She's also ranked top-10 in the nation in the 5,000m and 10,000m.
Rachel Koon made her season debut on the track. Koon took fourth in the 5,000m with a time of 16:01.55, which is currently ranked 27th in the nation and 12th in the East.
In the men's 5,000m, Ben Barrett and Patrick Sheehan both improved on their season bests with top-10 finishes in section two. Barrett took eighth with a time of 14:13.68 and Sheehan finished ninth with a time of 14:15.75.
Megan Moye led NC State's mid-distance runners with a runner-up finish in her 1,500m season debut. Moye crossed the finish line in 4:15.95, just 0.30 after the winner. The opening race moves her into solid regional position and is currently ranked fifth in the East and 13th in the nation.
Elly Henes added a 12th-place finish in the event with a time of 4:24.41 to win her heat and Megan Rempel crossed the finish in 4:25.00 to take second in her heat and 16th overall.
Decathlon:
Grant Rivers wrapped up the men's decathlon with a ninth-place finish and a new personal best with 6,606 points. The score moves Rivers from 10th to seventh in school history. Rivers finished top-10 in four of his five events today to conclude the meet on a strong note. He set a personal best in the javelin with a throw of 154'10" and added a seventh-place finish in the discus with a throw of 120'4".
Jumps:
Christopher Garrick added another event win for the Pack, taking the high jump crown after clearing the bar at 6'10.75", which was four inches and two progressions higher than the runner up.
Hurdles:
Gabriele Cunningham added an eighth-place finish in the 100m hurdles, crossing the finish line in 13.72, and Wolfpack alumna Alexis Perry took fourth overall in the event with a time of 13.48. in the men's 110m hurdles, Joshua Gandy ran a season best 14.94.
Up Next:
NC State will travel to the Penn Relays and Peyton Jordan Invitational next weekend.
