Softball Caps Off Second Day Of Homewood Suites Invite With Win Over Lehigh

RALEIGH - NC State's softball team capped off its second day of play at the Homewood Suites by Hilton RDU/RTP Invitational on Saturday evening with a 7-6 win over Lehigh after dropping an 8-7 decision with Fordham in its first game.
The Wolfpack moves to 5-14 while Fordham improves to 14-4 and Lehigh falls to 4-5 on the season.
Game Rewind vs. Fordham
-Both teams were kept at bay in the first two innings, and the Rams grabbed an early lead in the third as Sydney Canessa scored from third base on a sacrifice fly by Madison Shaw after hitting a double to left field.
-NC State took a 2-1 advantage in the bottom of the frame as freshman Haylee Kobziak hit a two-run homer, marking the first of her career.
-Neither team was able to score in the fourth inning, but the Pack plated two runs in the fifth and one more in the sixth to extend its lead to 5-1. Tyler Ross belted a two-run homer in the fifth for her second this season, and pinch runner Geena Autry scored on Kobziak's single to left field in the sixth.
-Fordham managed to score seven runs in the seventh as Lindsay Mayer was walked on loaded bases and Lauren Quense hit a grand slam to center field.
-NC State tried to rally in the bottom of the inning by adding two more runs to its score, as Jade Caraway scored on Molly Martin's single to right field and Cheyenne Balzer scored on a fielder's choice to third base.
-Freshman Peyton Silverman pitched her sixth complete game of the season, while Balzer and Kobziak led the team in batting with two hits in their four trips to the plate. Macauley Prickett was additionally 2-for-3 in the ninth spot of the lineup.
Game Rewind vs. Lehigh
-NC State scored one run apiece in the first two innings, as Moore hit an RBI single to allow Caraway to cross the plate from third in the first and Haley Finn scored from third on a groundout by Ross to second base.
-Both teams were scoreless in the next two innings, but the Pack extended its lead in the top of the fifth to 5-0. Kobziak drew a walk on loaded bases to allow pinch runner Autry to score, and Martin and Moore plated two more runs on a Lehigh error.
-In the sixth Balzer and Compton crossed home plate on back-to-back singles to give NC State a 7-0 lead.
-The Mountain Hawks managed to tally six runs in the bottom of the frame, which was led off by a two-run homer by Ashley Cole and a solo home run by Vicky Lattanzio. Mary-Hannah Smith followed with a triple up the right field line and scored on a single by Carolyn Wright to cut the deficit to 7-4.
-With runners on first and second and no outs, Lexi van Ooyen scored on an error and pinch runner Katie Schultz plated the sixth run on a wild pitch.
-In final half inning of the game Peyton Silverman earned the first save of her career by striking out the first two batters and only allowing one base hit.
-Brittany Nimmo pitched the first five innings of the matchup to earn her third win of the season.
-The Pack's batting order had a strong performance at the plate, as Caraway led the team with three hits in her five at-bats, while Compton, Finn and Prickett were 2-for-4 in the nightcap.

NC State will wrap up play at the Homewood Suites Invitational Sunday, facing Fordham in the championship game at 12:15 p.m. Lehigh and Rutgers play in the third-place game at 10:00 a.m.
