Wolfpack fires a 2322 in smallbore
CHARLESTON, S.C. – The ninth-ranked NC State rifle team enjoyed a record-breaking performance in the smallbore competition at the National Rifle Association (NRA) Sectional Saturday afternoon inside the Inuoye Marksmanship Center on The Citadel's campus.
The Wolfpack fired a team score of 2322 in the smallbore event to eclipse the previous school record of 2315 by seven points. NC State charted a 2339 team total in air rifle to compile an overall aggregate score of 4661 to finish first at the sectional match.
North Georgia claimed second in the event with a tally of 4550, The Citadel women's team was third with a mark of 4509 and The Citadel co-ed team was fourth with 4352 clip.
Miller's Minute
Overall thoughts…
"We really missed a golden opportunity today," said head coach Keith Miller. "With a program record smallbore score, all we needed to do was shoot an average air rifle score and we would have fired a nice total that would have improved our ranking average. It would have cut the gap between us and number eight in half, making the race for the critical top eight much tighter. As it is, we're statistically in about the same place that we were coming into the match."
On the team's upcoming schedule…
"While we're very happy with our smallbore today, we have some work to do over the next couple of weeks. We return to The Citadel in two weeks for our NCAA Qualifier match, which will be the final determiner for how we end up nationally. After that match, we'll know whether we qualified as a team for the NCAAs. If not, we'll also learn if we have any individual qualifiers."
Smallbore Notes
- NC State received strong scores from each of its counting shooters to record a program record.
- Lucas Kozeniesky fired the top overall smallbore with a mark of 585, highlighted by a perfect second series in the prone position.
- Lauren Phillips charted the next-best score in the match with a 582 clip and Caitlyn Ford was third with a score of 578.
- William Marciniak earned a perfect 100 on his second series of prone to compile an overall score of 577.
- Claire Zanti tallied a personal-best score of 575 in smallbore and Derya Pekari rounded out the lineup for the Pack with a 570.
Air Rifle Notes
- Unfortunately for NC State, the Wolfpack was not able to replicate its strong performance from smallbore in the air rifle competition.
- Phillips headlined the group with a 592, highlighted by a perfect first and sixth series, while Kozeniesky fired the next mark with a 590.
- Zanti recorded a 581 in air rifle and Ford logged a 576.
- Pekari also competed in the competition, earning a result of 574.
- The Wolfpack had a tough day in the event and finished with an air rifle team score of 2339.
Aggregate Notes
