Dennis Smith, Jr., with his fourth 30-point performance of the season
RALEIGH, N.C. – Despite a lights out shooting performance in the first half, NC State was unable to overcome a late Miami surge in the second half, dropping an 84-79 decision at PNC Arena on Saturday.
Dennis Smith, Jr., continued to climb the leaderboard on NC State's all-time greats, passing J.J. Hickson to take second on the Wolfpack's all-time freshman scoring list with 461 points. Smith Jr. finished with 31 points on 10-for-15 shooting.
Smith, Terry Henderson and Malik Abu—the third highest scoring trio in the ACC at 45.1 points per game—combined for 62 points against the Hurricanes.
Abu scored 10 points and Henderson added 21 points on 7-for-10 shooting.
NC State quickly blitzed Miami's defense, rushing out to an 18-9 lead and shooting a blazing 8-for-11 from the field to start the afternoon.
The Hurricanes were able to capitalize on second-chance opportunities to tie the game back up at 30-30, but the Wolfpack responded with an 11-0 run of its own en route to taking a 45-36 halftime lead. Smith Jr. hit a long pull up 3 in the final seconds of the half that sent the PNC Arena crowd into a frenzy as the teams went to the locker rooms.
The Wolfpack shot 62.1 percent as a team in the first 20 minutes largely due to excellent spacing on offense; Smith Jr. and Henderson shot a combined 8-for-9 from 3. On the defensive end, Omer Yurtseven blocked five shots, surpassing his career-high of two.
As a team, the Wolfpack blocked 11 shots. NC State entered the game averaging 3.2 blocks per contest.
Miami's prowess on the offensive boards fueled it in the second half as the Hurricanes finished the game with 17 offensive rebounds and 16 second chance points. A Bruce Brown 3-pointer with 6:50 to go gave the Hurricanes a lead they were able to keep for the rest of the game.
Davon Reed led Miami with a career-high 26 points.
NC State is back in action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. as the Wolfpack play Florida State at the Donald L. Tucker Civic Center. The game will be televised on ESPN2.
NC State's next home game is Feb. 15 against UNC-Chapel Hill at 8 p.m.
